I'll be building my first rod this Winter. It will be an Allstar 10'6" rod capable of 3/4-4 oz. It will be my "slinging metal" rod when the blues and stripers are off in the distance. I am purchasing it from Hatteras Outfitters. Here's the write up on the rod:

~ Matching Lengths ~ Our now famous "SPANISH BUSTER" is our marque Spanish Rod and WILL FLAT OUT SMOKE A 2 OZ FATTY STING SILVER! ~ Rated by us at 3/4-3 oz. it's a Light-Medium Action Surf Blank with a Moderate Taper ~ Also works great as a Lure/Plugging rod for: Small-Med. Blues, Alberts, Pups, Schoolie Bass, Big Trout, etc. and makes for a fine, lighter duty bottom fishing rod. ~ Recommended conventional reels: HO Custom HS Abu 5500's and 6500's, especially the HO UltiMag. ~ Spinning: Daiwa 2500-3500's and Shimano 4000-5000's. ~ When the fish are out of reach for most folks you'll be the one catching them with your "SPANISH BUSTER" and UltiMag.

I have the 6500 CS Mag reel right now, but with some minor modifications, I will be ready to rock and roll!

I live in Cary, NC, and build surf and fly rods for my own use. There are a number of custom rod builders in the area, but I am not aware of any shops in the state that currently specialize in rod making supplies. I rely on mail order for most of my rod components and supplies.

For years, Tom Kirkman had a custom rod shop in High Point and sold rod blanks and supplies, but a few years ago Tom started RodMaker Magazine and closed the shop.

Thanks to all for your post reguarding rod building supplies. I have found several websites that will supply my needs. I have also found a couple of websites that offer help to novice rod builders like myself. http://rodbuilding.org is on of them.

I plan on stating to build my own rods too. I don't know how well you can get around. There is a rod builders show at the Charlotte Convention Center on Feb 21 - 22, 2004. I plan on going one day to see if they have any good deals and pick up some tips. Here is the web site.
