Hi I will be heading down to topsail next week and have a couple questions on using gulp. I have used it several times and have not had much luck..

What size jig head do most of you use? What colors of gulp do you use? and how do you all retrieve it.. Slow, jerk, Jig?

Thanks in advance rob

Have faith in The Gulp!

I have used gulp with FANTASTIC results. 1/8 to 1/4 ounce jig heads always have worked well for me depending on depth, current, size of the gulp, etc. Retrieves can vary depending on the target species and their position in the water column. Say, for flounder, you would most likely want to work your jig slowly along the bottom with a light upward jigging motion. As for the colors and type, I use Gulp! 4 inch swimming mullet in chartreuse with a yellow or red jig head.

Good luck,
-Alex

I used some of the 3" and 4" gulp shrimp in new Penny this last summer fishing off the Seaview pier in North Topsail. Did catch fish, but had better luck with live shrimp. I kept the gulp about 2' off the bottom with an occasion slow rise and fall. My opinion - the 3" works better and the in general - gulp worked better in stained water or on overcast days. Might be important that I was targeting spec trout, which I think are slower to take the bait, least off the pier, and I've always thought trout were more visually picky.

Should be a great time for NTB - good luck!

We make it down 2-3 times a year last year the first week of november was great. We caught alot of pups black drum and trout from seaview and the surf near there.

As far as the gulp goes from the surf it seems as if I get a lot of real small hits just quick little pecks. I never have anything take it it seems like they are just hitting the tail.. I guess that could be pinfish> I thought maybe i was rigging it wrong.. Do you generally just run a straight line to the Jig head?

I would agree about the small quick hits, had same thing and had some of the local folks mention pins do that too. I tried fishing the gulp using only a small jig head and dragging along the bottom, and also under a float bobber with a small weight about 2 or 3 ft up from a gold #4 treble. Under the bobber worked best for me, doing the slow lift and drop to simulate some movement.

I've always had some gulp with me, but always use the live shrimp when I've got them, when fishing off the pier that is... in the surf, the gulp will stay on better for me, and I think actually worked better. I think fish has less time or ability to "see" the bait in the surf.

I do agree with adp - especially off the pier that some fluoro or really good mono will get more trout. I switched quickly from braid after seeing neighbors pull in fish on mono. Works for trout imo...

Be sure to have all different weights and head colours. Some days/nights they like jerk shad better... sometimes shrimp..What size...which one?Molting or glow shrimp are two examples that seem to work. New penny can always be counted on in the jerk shad. Now then, on to Mirror Lures....Lets see..uh..

I've had good success using either pearl white or new penny 3" shrimp on about a 1/4 oz red jig head. Surf needs to be fairly calm and I bring it in slow and twitch it a little along the bottom for flounder. I've also caught puppy drum, specks and (of course) bluefish while trying for flounder. I do get a lot of small tugs from pinfish nipping the tail, but the bait holds up well. Also had good success using the gray pogie (mackeral flavor) for specks. Few years ago, I was standing next to my friend who caught a 20lb striper with his trout rod using that bait.
