Garden City Beach is on the other side of the marsh from Murrells Inlet. Take Atlantic Avenue from Rt. 17 Business. GC Pier is at the end. Good structure exists along most of the beach both ways. I tried to fish yesterday, but it was already dangerous. Check this buoy (
http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=41004) and average with this buoy (
http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=41013). GC is about halfway between them. If the average is more than 3-3 1/2 ft. the surf is going to be rough. 41013 isn't giving the wave height for some reason, but it was over 9 ft. earlier today. You can check this (
http://www.wunderground.com/MAR/AM/254.html) for the marine forecast. Things look OK starting Monday. I would stick to the pier until then. I use 2 rods for the beach; a 12 footer for as far as I can chuck it and an 8 footer for closer. Terminal tackle is a 3 oz. pyramid sinker with 2 hooks above it. In heavier surf I have used 4 and 5 oz. to hold the bottom, but it's tough to see a fish on (unless it's Moby Dick) with that much weight. Sorry I can't recommend a charter because I haven't found a good one myself. They are either expensive ($325+ for 1/2 day inshore) or can't put you on the fish. You can actually shore fish the "hot spots" that the charters go to. The Murrells Inlet jetty is reachable from GC Beach and Huntington Beach, but it is a hike (1-1.5 miles at Huntington and maybe .75 miles at GC Beach). Be safe.
