As far as what lb. test to use, I think 20 lb. test is pretty common (although you will need a shock tippet probably in the 40 - 60 lb range for tarpon or a wire leader for sharks). Of course you can go lighter or heavier depending on if you are an optimist or pessimist... I am also being too lazy to look up the specs on the equipment you have, so obviously stay withing the range of what rod and reel can handle.
The idea in the aformentioned thread about using mono line as backing for a braided line was the best idea I've heard in a long time - going to try that one out myself.
