Hey guys,

First post here and I've been on here lurking quite a bit. I grew up fishing on Toledo Bend but my father in law introduced me to surf fishing and I'm loving i so far. The drive from NE Houston to Galveston isn't too bad.

Anyways, I made a couple of egg floats after stumbling upon them online. One size is 0.5 ounces and the other is 1.8 ounces. I was planning on having these ready to go with a few different length leaders depending on the depth.

I was thinking that I would use the larger 1.8 ouncers for the 2 ounce Bucktail but am I wrong? Should I use the smaller size, or does it not even matter?

Thanks,

Matt

I've used that technique and variations of it for everything from rainbow trout to redfish. Its a great way to get some casting distance with small lures or even the tiniest of trout flies. You're casting the weighted float and the lure is just going along for the ride.

Matt - if your float and lure are close to the same weight I bet you will see them orbiting each other when you cast. That will kill your distance. But go ahead and give it a try, might work and nothing to lose.

Is this a float that you can fill with what to some extent? (The reason i saw this was I saw a video on youtube from a teenager in Florida showing off an egg-shaped float that he filled with water. It was the same size as what the guy in your video showed).

@Jim Bob I wouldn't think that orbiting would be a problem because you're supposed to drive a tiny nail into the side of the egg and leave roughly 1/4 inch out for the jig to hang off when casting. Or are you speaking from experience and have had that problem?

Do you think the technique would be effective using a smaller egg?

@hawkman The eggs I'm referring to are made with the little wooden craft eggs.

I'm thinking about making "custom" ones using two-piece, plastic Easter Eggs, with "ballast weight" inside, glued shut, and through-wired to take all the stress load of casting and fighting a fish . . .

Drive a nail into the float and hang the jig on the nail you say? I'm not sure what you're talking about so I'll just keep quiet. But I am curious - can you post a pic of the rig and tell us what the point is? I mean, are you trying to get more casting distance with a 2 oz bucktail or are you trying to not hang up on structure below the surface?

these are wood and uses the weight of the wood for distance, seen them used here for blue gills off the bank to cover a lot of ground
