Hi all. New here so I am not sure if this the right place to post. The majority of my fishing has been with a 710z and 750ss. Been using these reels for over 25 years. But a while ago I acquired a Silstar Vertex 7ft baotcaster rated for 10 to 25lb mono and 3/8 to 1oz weight. Never baitcaster before and I am on a strict budget. So I am considering the KastKing Rover 40 to see if I like it. Is the Rover40 a good match for the rod or do I need the 60. My fishing is the piers and shores of Chesapeake Bay around Havre de Grace, Aberdeen and Conowingo dam. Thanks in advance.

Looks like this reel is an Abu clone or an Akios clone out of somewhere where manufacturing costs are lower than Sweden or USA.

The smaller the Abu reel the easier it is to learn on as a smaller spool has less weight to cause overruns.

40 would be my recommendation but my only experience has been with ABU reels for the last 40 years or so.

Thanks Garboman. Which abu and axios is it a clone of?

Hey Anthony R, you're fishing in places that I used to fish. I can't help you with the Kastking reels, as like Garboman, I've used ABU's for a long time. I own many, and most were made in Sweden back in the 70's. I only know of one person who's using a Kastking, a fellow on a bass fishing site, and like you he's new to it. He's having his share of problems too, but I don't know if it has anything to do with the reel.

I very much agree with Garboman, that the 5000 size ABU is a good size. That's a reel that will hold about 200 yards of 12 lb test mono, which is how many of the baitcaster reels line capacity used to be rated, based on mono. That was before the braids that are popular now. So, for the fishing you're planning, if that size 40 reel will hold 200 yards or there about, of 12 lb mono, then you're in the same ball park.

I will also say this, the rod also makes a world of difference with the casting setups. I use the majority of mine for lures. When I've tossed baits, it's often been with a larger size reel, such as the ABU 6600 and I like a longer rod, around 8'. Silstar has made some very good rods over the years and, has also made rods for other brands, but not all of their rods are ideal for all purposes. A 7' rod is a good length for the area you're fishing, particularly if you're tossing lures.

Like with spinning setups, one size doesn't fit all purposes, and depending on exactly how you plan to fish, what you're looking to pair up, may or may not work well. The only way to know, is give it a try.

Thank you Big Jim. I will have some time this coming week to visit some local tackle shops to actually touch a baitcaster and will provide an update.

Well, depending on were you are, perhaps go to Herb's Tackle Shop in Northeast, or if you're near Baltimore, go to Tochterman's on Eastern Ave. Both have been around a long time & you'll get good advice from either.

"Type in Abu 5000 on the interest and you will see the similarity. The 5000 has been around for 50 years or so. "

The ABU reels were originally made in Sweden. For a period of time the ABU Ambassadeurs were made in Taiwan by Omoto. At the same time, Omoto was making the Omoto Chief which is very similar to the Ambassadeur. When Pure fishing bought out ABU, the manufacture of several models were shifted to China. Also some ABU employees were released. About this time, Omoto started manufacturing Akios reels for a UK company.

Omoto manufactures baitcasters, surf reels, jigging reels, fly reels, and off shore reels up to size 80 in their Taiwan facilities. They also manufacture LP reels and spinning reels at their China facility. The China facility is mass production oriented.

Additionally, Omoto manufactures hooks and braided line in Taiwan.

Omoto builds reels that are sold by companies under several labels. They also sell parts to reel manufacturers.

Regarding Kastking reels, all I can say is that there are reels that look like the older ABU baitcast reels. However their quality might be different. A few years ago I was at the China Fish Expo in Beijing. I passed by a booth that had reels on display that looked like Omoto reels. I asked if they were affiliated with Omoto. Their response was "We like Omoto". I believe "like" meant "similar to". Omoto denied any affiliation.

Anthony, If you are going to be shore fishing, you may want to consider a longer rod.
