This happened a couple weeks ago. I posted it on spearboard but thought you guys here may find it interesting. The whole encounter lasted about 12 minutes. I was about 500 yards from the beach when it started. Despite lunging at and hitting the shark several times I ultimately had to keep retreating to the beach because he wouldn't leave me alone. I have a camera mounted to my speargun and was able to record a lot of what happened. I ended up with one of the best tasting sheepshead I ever ate. Since that day I have changed my rigging and gear quite a bit and decided that I will be doing no more solo spearing trips, lol.

All this time I thought they only ate blue runners down that way.
Your right about having a buddy diver.
I see Rob Murphy made a dive this past week, that's unbelievable for such a short time.

thanks for the comments guys. regarding the knife, it was a $4 bait knife. I decided to cut my losses and not try to retrieve it!

spearing from a kayak is great. I just did it for the first time this week. It is a very nice feeling to have a safe place to retreat if things heat up in the water.

some people carry bangsticks, but there seems to be a lot of controversy over using them. I am new to spearfishing but from what I learned so far it seems rarely necessary to kill a shark. The thought of killing the shark in the video didnt cross my mind. The 12' tiger shark all over the news this week - well that appears to be a very different story.

I saved some of the old photos before they pulled them with the statements they made about slaughtering fish, but I sure won't post any.

Awesome video. If that were me, the shark would have lost me in a brown slick trailing behind me!

Jesse I can never find anyone to hunt with..
If you get into it, and you can put us on some fish.
I will load the yak and make the drive.
I have some nice guns and you can try them out.
Also some things i would like to sell, and will make you a good deal.

So keep me in mind ok?

Puppy - I have a rob allen gun so my type of mount may not work for your gun. Here are pics of what I did:

Mounting a camera on a gun is a popular topic on spearboard - try doing some searches and you will find lots of useful info.

No kids to share it with and no "accidents" happened, but I think I still have some adrenaline in my system from the incident!

:eek:WOW:eek: I tell you that's really something and for it to last that long:eek: In my situation it would have lasted maybe one minute because that shark would have been swimming in my mess that would've made the Exxon oil spill look like a drop in the ocean. That shark would'nt want anything to do with all my GOO:--| I've got to ask,,,How did you feel about losing that knife at the most important time in your life:p. I'm sorry but I pissed my pants when I saw that knife sink away, it almost looked like it was in slow motion when that knife was dropping away. I said to myself what else can happen to this poor guy thats about to be dinner. Amazing video and story and I'm so happy you didn't become DINNER:eek:

I learned quite a few things from the experience. One of those things is that I will be carrying 2 knives from now on! Although not filmed, I did manage to grab my spear shaft and poke the shark a few times, so at least I still had a sharp object on me.
