I was given an 11'4 Garcia Conolon heavy (2-5oz) rod. It was a spinning rod with at least 3 broken guides. I had a guy re-do the rod and he asked me if I wanted it re-done as a spinning or conventional rod. I was considering getting a conventional combo so I went with that.

I never bought a reel so I never used the rod.

I'm guessing this thing is far from the sensitive tip/fast action you guys might like for pompano fishing?

The overall length of the grip is 32"
The reel seat is centered at ~25".
Not near as long as what seems to be on long surf rods of today.

I was considering a Penn Squall II 15 star drag (~$160) for it and putting 20-lb mono on it (maybe Sufix Titanium)

I'd take all comments and advice. Thanks.

Oops. The bottom image (above) is a picture I had saved from the web. The photo below is my own image of my rod's make and model.

How soft is the tip?

I have a couple smaller old fiberglass rods like that. They are super soft (whippy), bad for launching bait, but actually good for detecting light bites.

I'm not sure how to answer that. I'll check it out.

I'm not after sharks or big drum, per sé, but rather my "white whale": Pompano.
