Something out there today was smart and hungry. It also ended up very well fed. Unfortunately it got full before I could get a hook in it but that is why it's called fishing and not catching. It didn't eat like a shark or a ray and it outsmarted every change of tackle or technique I throw at it. Pretty sure I know what it was but that's why we call it fishing and not catching.

The whiting are still there in numbers and I could have caught and used a fresh one but I have so many right now I was trying not to catch them and tossing back the ones I did. Refused to use shrimp for a couple hours but got bored with not catching so I did just to confirm the whiting population. Couldn't find any specks or blues. :(

It was still a good day despite learning that free braid when you buy a reel is worth exactly what you paid for it. I always say no and go with power pro but I was hurting and needing to get back in the surf at the time. If any of you reeding this even thinks too hard about it I guarantee I'll have another wind knot till I restring it because it is actually that bad. I'm known to be good at detangling wind knots but this stuff is ridiculous (spinning rod not even conventional) and at 20#s it's so small it's hard to work.

While I will always love my Penn reels and keep using and rebuilding the ones my Grandfather passed down to me I could not in anyway be more disappointed with my current production Penn rods. They are crap. I have 20+ year old Penn rods that have been abused and bounced around in the bed of my truck across state lines or in a boat for days that still are great but the current 'made in some unnamed third world country' stuff sucks hard. I've babied them both more than any other gear and they constantly fail. The warranty on rods is very different from the reels. No repairs or parts at all, only replacement and that is at a $20+ cost to you. http://www.pennfishing.com/PENN-repair-department.html I'll be sticking with Ocean Master for lower cost until I start building my own. Again just another lesson learned.

No matter the problems or lack of hooking the elusive big one I still spent a couple hours relaxing in the surf doing what I love and not working so it was a good day.

Thanks for the report man. As for the mystery biters I'd say you maybe had a case of the crabs. If the crabs are plentiful and competing for your bait offering they will grab your bait and try to swim away with it. Same way the gulls do, hence you register a bite then nothing. Maybe not, depending on your bait.

When stuff is free there is a reason. I have confidence in PP to, maybe better braids out there, but I'll dance with the one that brung me.

My Penn reels are tough, solid, and good value. I agree man, my Penn rods only lasted a season or two before falling apart. My OM rods keep preforming year after year even though I'm really ruff on them.

Glad you got out, I may hit the surf a couple more times this year, but I'm afraid this years season is winding down fast. My cut off is 65 degrees.

Fort Pulaski has the water temp below 70. Two cold fronts on the way this week. Eight foot tides this weekend. I might go ahead and call it quits for the surf this year.

I agree about the crabs. I made the mistake first starting out in the surf by getting squid for bait. I couldn't understand how I was getting bites and slow runs and not being able to set the hook. I got frustrated and could feel something on the line, so I reeled in real slow trying to get a look. It wound up being a large blue crab swimming with my bait. Mystery solved.:fishing:
