Greetings Komrades:

Page 28 of the little white Ande knot book highlights the Tunks knot.

Anybody used this as a shock knot with success?

Looks like it might give the slim beauty a run for its money.

Insights appreciated.

It's essentially a loop-to-loop connection instead of a knot per se. It uses a double-overhand (surgeon's) knot to start (like the slim beauty, "SB") but diverges from there. Not sure if you gain a strength advantage because it's not a true knot. Also not sure about how streamlined it is or how it runs through the guides versus the SB. I assume the characteristics are similar. Will try it in the field this weekend and maybe rig up a ghetto tension-test rig and report back with some data.

In related news, I'm too lazy to tie a Bimini on the pier in the dark in a 20-kt. breeze-- how likely am I to get in trouble with a spider hitch? Do any of you guys use the spider hitch as your go-to knot for doubling your running line?

a lot of guys use a spider hitch instead of a bimini, Drumdum is one if I remember correctly. Personally I like a bimini and it is easy for me to tie. I am kind of a knot junkie always looking for newer, better, slimmer and stronger but you cannot beat a well tied bimini to uni IMO.

I wish we had a knot/line specific forum. I think it would get a lot of use since it is such a huge part of our sport

Hey everybody,
Have not posted for a while. I have been busy moving. Now I only live 3 hours from the beach...................................
I was on a cobia charter and watched a very talented young potato man tie a nice 20 turn bimni for a loop.
I had always used a spider up until that day and I vowed to learn the bimini or turn in my man card.
Now I tie a bimini for all my loops.
I have to say I used to get snagged and always break off at the spider.
I have been snagged a bunch after and always came back with part of a rig instead of loosing my swivel and everything else.
My heaver knot is a bimini to a Yucatan knot and it really works good and is small enough to go through a 40-405I. (which is really small)

+1 on the knot/line specific forum. I seem to spend a lot of time on this subject too. I tie BT to noname but I usually do it before I hit the beach and keep spare spools with the BT already tied on them. If I have to tie on the beach it's a Spider Hitch. I just can't seem to find a comfortable way to tie the BT on the beach. Maybe I just need to put the rod holder on the truck and practice for a couple hours tomorrow. :D

Don't know if this will help you but tying a BT on the beach can be done by sticking in the rod holder then forming your loop around the reel handle them tying from there. I'm sure there is a video still around showing that method.

Works kind of on same principle as no name as far as running line crossing over leader to hold.. Although with a 20' plus shockline that is precut,it may be a pain in the ass.. It looks fairly simple and easy to tie for smaller flouro leaders for Spanish and such though..

Since I have learned on this forum how to tie a short bimini with reel handle,it CAN BE tied on a pier in 20k plus breeze.. I saw an even easier way to tie a short bimini one handed last night,will have to experiment with it as well.. Spider is a fine knot also,and used by many,not quite as strong as a bimini,but works well..

Sweet thanks guys-- I'll give the Bimini a try.

I threw the Tunks last night on the field with an 8oz. lead on 100# shock and 20# mainline (spider hitch). Ran through the guides fine but I still need to do those tension tests.
