I read an interesting article that popped up on my Facebook feed yesterday about people starting to convert from treble hooks on their lures to in-line single hooks. They mentioned a variety of reasons (from better hook up ratios to it being harder for a fish to throw a single hook vs. a treble), so I was wondering if anyone here had strong opinions either way. I was considering converting my lures just because of the areas I fish. There's quite a bit of stuff on the bottom (mostly oyster shells) that love to snag and bend out/break off lures with treble hooks. I guess the same could happen with an in-line single hook, but I imagine there'd be less of a chance.

I'm almost entirely catch-and-release, so trebles are a real no-no. I use circle hooks for bait, and have swapped all my topwater trebles with VMC in-line hooks.
I put them point up, which makes for a good hook-up, and also keeps them from snagging stuff.

Ive tried that on a few topwater lures this year. And i cant see where its a big difference. And thats on speckled trout.
Yeah, shouldn't be an issue with top water stuff. Maybe more useful with deep diving crank baits and the like. I know it's not super common to fish with those in saltwater (at least not around here), but I've been watching this Australian guy on YouTube smash saltwater fish with what I traditionally thought of as "freshwater" lures. Seems like in-line would be the way to go.

Depending on species you are chasing.Any bluefish plugs a single hook on the rear is better for releasing fish.(blues generally hit the back of the plug)If you are releasing alot of fish but are worried about hook ups, crush the barbs. When changing hooks on swimmers be careful because it can also change the swim characteristics of the plug. You can use freshwater in salt and vise versa, but you need to use salt water hooks or youll be replacing them often.

Agree with the comments on singles over trebles. I used to cut one hook off trebles and it worked. Mainly did it to protect myself on dehooking the fish. Also tried single j-hooks on the rear with nothing on the front. Didn't work too well. I've always crushed my barbs and do so today on plugs with circles. Use them on top water and shallow sinking. Works just fine. You lose one now and then but 90 % of my fishing is C&R. VMC singles are good. Depending on the structure i'll use a single circle on the front and one on the rear with a six-nine inch length of mono with a pinch weight. usually tip it with a piece of gulp or fishbites. Fun!:)
