thinking of getting a cooler rack for my truck. I'm a little worried about clearance of power lines and train bridges in the city .I've got a full size chevy and 12 ' rods. Do you guys transport rods in the racks during the trip to the water or just on the beach?

I do it but as soon as I get enough money to get a cap for th back of my truck I'm going to do roof rack for transport to an fro. Rods get dirty up front as well as possible damage from debris flying up off th road.

BC. it is not a good idea to go to and from the beach with your rods in the rack. if you hit them with low tree limbs , you can snap the tips off. other hazzards are there also. i have used a ski rack i got at sears about 25 years ago and it is still doing the job. also, when you get a rack see that there is a pin in the bottom of each holder. if not, with a long butt hanging below the holder ,you may very well snap off the butts as you bump up and down in the sand. i have seen it happen.

I have had them in the front afew times, but any rods that break down I do. The other thing to keep in mind on the Rod/cooler combo is not to lock the air flow to the radiator. In the summer the highways can get pretty hot. If the cooler or beach chairs are up high and close to the grill they can restrict air flow. Most of the pre fab ones sit out pretty good. One rack that I helped make for a friend sat to close. It was fin in the spring and fall, but got things alittle warm in mid summer. Also be carful not to get to carried away with what you put on the front. A lot of the newer vehicles are more sensitive and can knock the alignment out if you get to much weight out there. I'd keep it under a 100# for the rack and equipment for any highway travel.
