Agree...I'd rather have a spinner for retrieve, but I'd also rather throw these with braid, and there are places that will get you politely told you aren't welcome, so I have a mono outfit as well and that means conventional to get some distance. Small spool diameter at end of cast means you might like a very high retrieve like a Saltist or other 6:1 reel. Big main gears also mean big drags. JMO. Guage your intended purpose and locale, and go with that.

14-18lb mono plus shock might be a decent compromise on a spinner. Limp as possible like Sakuma or Stren, on my spinners.

If I am throwing 4-6 oz almost always go to the conventional… mono main line to shocker

And there are a lot of folks who would agree with you.

But I have been throwing braid successfully on conventional reels for probably 8 or more years. For most heavier casting situations, I used Penn Squalls 12s or Penn Fathom 12s with 30lb suffix of J-Braid with the brakes (mags or centrifugal) set about half way and the reels cast very well with few blow ups and when they occur, I am usually able to clear them without much trouble. I really like the sensitivity of braid plus those smaller reels make my casting set up really light. Also, braid lasts pretty much forever so I don't need to worry about it getting old like mono. So far, so good!

I don't use braid when fishing for Drum on the Point out of courtesy to others and it would be miserable to untangle braid with other lines and those entanglements happen often when fishing in the conga line.
