I have been looking at different websites about rigs and setups. I have found a couple interesting ones for catfishing that have a three way swivel attached to a weight on the bottom the main line on one end and a hook or hook aray on the trailing end.

My question is about how a three way swivel effects the overall strength of a rig vs tying in via a dropper loop or other line to line connection.

I will try to find a pic to help illustrate where my pathetic writing skillz fail.

I use them in swift water for cats and never had one break, the whole idea is to use a lighter weight line for the sinker so if it hangs up you don't loose the rest of the rig, just tie another sinker leader and add another sinker, so you keep swivel and hook

In Hawaii we call this a dunking rig, and it is a very popular way to fish. I have never had a swivel break on me, nor for that matter have I every had a friend tell me a swivel broke on them.

Assuming you are using the same strength or better swivel as the rest of the rig, the knots will likely be the point of failure, not the swivel.

We used them here in the Chesapeake Bay when trolling for striped bass along the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel or trolling the ocean front. This rig could catch as much as 80 Lb of fish at one time.
