Well it was a nice long weekend of fishing at Grandview. Most of the regulars are giving up on Cobias, for they believe they are in deeper water. But in not giving up cause we got to a late start this year so im dragging it out .
Well here it goes, for the many years ive fished for Cobias ive always said they fight pretty good but nothing spectacular. The biggest Cobia ive caught was a 78lbs cobe and it came straight to the pier with no fight. To me pups fight harder and ive always said that Cownose rays fight harder just my opinion.
Friday after a long day and just a few runs and some rays it was around 2pm and i was still working on fishing. I caught a nice size blue fish and i cut him and slung out the head straight out. Around 10 minutes later my alarm starts to sing this fish was peeling line like a king. I walked up to my rod turn the clicker off and let him take what he wanted but when i saw how much line he took i started to tighten the drag and work on this fish.
Oh i forgot i fish with a 10 foot custom heaver with a grandwave 30 with 17lb suffix tri with 7/0 circle hooks. Well right away i felt the magic of the head shake but this time it was a very violent head shake and all i could do is hold the rod and let this fish disrespect me. The cobe came to the top and we could see him about 150 yards. This fish was thrashing his head and he was coming out the water and splashing with his tail. He did this 3 times as i kept pressure on him. It was a 35 minute fight and ive never been so nervous fishing. This mule just wanted to take my rod with him. Anyways i kept working on him from the left to the right side of the pier. This fish finaly got alittle tired so i took over so i had him about 20 yards to the left side of the pier everyone and their mama's watching and this fish just starts spinning on its side and wraps my leader wish is 60lb test he wraps this around his body and ping there goes my line. This was a mule he had to been in the high 70's or low 80's. But that is fishing sometimes you wins sometimes you lose. I have changed my mind on cobia's and their fight. This one changed my mind. all i can say i enjoyed the fight even thought i was alittle nervous. I had a 5 foot section of my leader fraid like weedeater line i have it hanging on the pole under my 64lb cobe's tail. Two hours later we had another hook up but fish was lost cause the line got hooked on a pin rig. Thats fishing and that the one that got away. James:p

The one that was caught before most likely!

Well James it sure sounds like you had one heck of a day after reading your post on the event that took place from the Grandview pier. You know what though it's all good because now you have a new perspective for the elusive COBIA!

Whenever people talk about Cobia you always come to mind because the name Flat Line James is always associated with big Cobia's. I can identify with the sequence of vents that you went through just before the Cobia broke off because I had a similar situation happen to me with another species of fish. Hey james at least you have a story that will outlast the the steaks you could have eaten. Hang in there cheif because you know it's not over until it's over!

At least you got a look at him! Wish I were there to see the action. Sounds like that's a cobe that has learned from previous experience :D .

I'm sure you'll get another shot soon.
