Any ideas on whether or not a Battle 6000 would work for tarpon fishing? Of course not too often, looking for a powerhouse reel that I'm not scared to push around. Would prefer a battle to match the other reels I've got.

I've heard that these would be smoked by a good sized tarpon. Any idea if that's true, and/or why it would?

I disagree with the fact that it will die if you have a tarpon on it... It has a smooth drag,as well as a strong one.. The gears may come into play, but I think it would take more than one to do so.. I think it would do fine for a few fish..Although if I was fishing with a spinner constantly for tarpon it would be something that is going to catch more than a few before the gears go in it..

Thanks for the advice. It certainly won't be used often for tarpon - more often bull reds and sharks, plus the big jacks whenever they show up around here and the rare cobia. Tarpon are only going to be a fish that I have the will to target on my annual summer trip to Sarasota, Florida - which lasts a week, and we're lucky to come across any tarpon. Well, aside from the 5 footer that lives in between the two docks at my friend's grandparent's home. We haven't even hooked him in the three years we've been down there, for whatever reason he doesn't appear to have left that general spot. We're working on finding out to get him to take a bait, and we're going to rig up a system involving the heavy spinner and then a conventional rig - probably my upgraded 9/0 senator - sort of like what kingfishermen on the pier do. We'll winch him out of the heavy structure on the conventional setup (which after being upgraded has over 35 pounds of max drag), and then when he's in open water we'll break off the heavier line and fight him on the spinner.

Once again, thanks for the response :)
