Hey guys, my name is Scott, I live in Northern Virgina, Centreville to be exact, but im looking for some help with my saltwater/bay fishing expierence, I mainly fish for bass now...but am very familiar with surf fishing, have the gear, I just never catch anything exciting, I sit here and read all these threads about Rockfish and blue fish being caught...cant seeing to get any, Ive been to sandy point a million times. If theres anyone out there with in obviously reasonable distance that could take me under there wing and help me out, I would be extremly greatful, I have my own transportation, and alot of gear, not exactly sure if its the right gear but, I have some. I would love to gain some knowledge so when my son who is almost 2 is ready for fishing i dont look like a fool, cant seem to get my 4 year old daughter into it...but thats ok. Any takers let me know? Its about a 1-2 hour drive to sandy point from my house depending on traffic, work is flexible and I take days off to fish all the time so my schedule is pretty free if anyone is actually willing to link up....thanks!

The best things to do is learn to fish the tides, learn as much as you can about what you're fishing for, try to get some nautical charts of where you want to fish, always try to fish with someone better than you, pay attention to how others are fishing and read this forum. It's all one big learning curve that takes time. Also keep a log book of each trip. I started keep a log of my trips to The Tank in 2002 so I know pretty much what's going to happen and plan my trips accordingly. Good luck and have fun.

Everything Catman says is true. Your boy is 2, you have a few years. Your a bass fisherman so you got it 50% figured out. Go to Walmart and buy the Zebco Spiderman rod and the Zebco Cinderella rod. Teach the boy how to cast in the yard, garage, basement, kitchen etc.. The girl will quickly become jealous and copy the action. They will break the rods and sword fight with them and that is ok.

When they are in school/daycare go to your local pond/stream and figure out the bluegill. When your boy is four (maybe 5) take him there with a new Zebco or maybe a tiny spinning rod. Use the methods you know to make sure they catch fish and more than the fish will be hooked -if you fail have a backup plan for entertainment like looking for grizzly bear clues. Always remember their attention span is short. You see any boredom then let them hunt for bear clues, pokemon nonsense and "a better spot dad". I found success with a transparent bobber 2 feet above a tiny crappie jig. After your glorious outing tell them stories of the big ones in the saltwater.

Sandy Point is relatively family friendly but is not so for the lure fisherman in general- it is world class for bait fishing at certain times of year though- take em for that when they can bait their own hook and do 75% of the operation. You'll figure that out soon enough. Again, you got a few years to learn what, when, why and how. By the time you are the man hopefully they are still interested.

In the mean time rig your favorite large mouth bass rod for stripers. Bass Assasins, Zarra Spookes and Kastemasters which all get it done almost as well as a white bucktail. By the time your kids are old enough to change the channel you'll have the Bay figured out to a point where Dad is the man and the kids have a great hobby. When you fish the surf just upsize everything. I fish most of the Chesapeake- from shore most of it can be done with 7' rods...sure you'll need more here and there and in the surf but, you'll figure it out...as I polish a 12 footer. Again, you'll figure that out too.

I am trying to fish with someone better than me! That's why I'm hoping someone is willing to take me out! Keeping a log is what I do for bass fishing so that's easy to do.

My username is my initials, FJ07 is for 2007 FJ cruiser bc before I had kids I had a bada$$ FJ Cruiser that was like my baby, lifted, huge tires, and all blacked out...but I ended up selling it and buying a 4runner for a more family friendly car....... We already are practicing casting with a spiderman pole haha! thanks for the advice! I normally go to sandy point with my 8 foot surf rods and bring a 7 foot bass rod with my shimano stradic with braid and a leader to throw lures, I have caught more rockfish on the potomic river off of fort belvoir where I work than I have fishing from shore on the bay.....last time I went up to sandy point I brought a buddy who cant even cast 5 feet in front of him and he ended up catching 2 keeper rockfish and the other 3 of us got skunked. Dont get me wrong I was very happy for him, but when youre the "fisherman" in the group and the person with the least expierence catches and you dont it kind of hurts! I know sandy point is more for the bait fisherman and not the lure fisherman, but being from nova and everyone being so shy on sharing spots with other respectful fisherman its kind of hard finding new territory, espeically when its a 2 hour + drive. dont get me wrong I totally understand people dont want to share "secret" spots fearing they will get broadcasted all over.....I just really want to step my game up...
