Looking for a decent set up for throwing lures in the surf. So far looking at a 9ft with maybe a 4000 to 4500 size reel. Please recommend what you would use and why. Budget would be 250ish for set up. Usually run 17 to 20 lb mono, and would be just for throwing lures out, already have bait soakers. Thanks!

You’d probably get a little more information, if you would also list the weights/ types of lures you’ll be throwing as well! A rod rated to 2 ounces, is not going to throw a 4 ounce plug!
Also, you’re going to get information all over the place, do you have a certain brand you like as well?
That will also help narrow things down!

Generally speaking a 10ft rod rated 1-4oz 4000 series reel with 15 or 20 lb braid with a 20- 30lb mono shock leader 2-3 times around the spool

I have 2 9 foot Tsunami TSAWSS-902MH Airwaves which are rated for 1 to 3 1/4 oz. lures and 12-25 lb. line. There are a couple of older Penns on them, but you can put a Penn Battle 3 on and get both rod and reel for about $300. I've used this set for years with both lures and weight & bait up to 6 ounces with no problem. I have many others rods/reels and this set up is my go to when fishing heavier lures in the surf. The rod is light and loads well for especially for 2 ounce plus lures.

I recommend going to a reputable tackle shop and touch and feel what is available. A 9’ rod is an ideal length in my opinion- however I would consider a 10’ also. As far as a reel the Penn Battle recommended above in a 4000 series is an excellent choice. I would stick to 12 lb mono or 20 lb braid, either with a 20 lb mono shock leader.
