what month does it realistically make sense to head out to surf fish in va beach area? Is it a matter of the water temp?

I have caught rockfish from the surf in Virginia Beach in the dead of winter. A couple of puppy drum and specks, too. The bite does get better once the water warms, but ya never know. A bad day of fishing ...

I won’t hit the surf till late April early May. I’ve never had good results during March. Skates are out in full force in cooler water but ya never know what might swim through. Tight lines!
