The black drum continue to hit around the Sunset Beach bridge. I drove down and caught 12 more from about 6 to 9 pm. Fish are still running a pound or two each, with the bigger 4 or 5 lb size absent since early December. It is still a night fishing enterprise, as I’ve yet to have a bite during the day. On this trip I used frozen shrimp, but the drum didn’t seem to mind. I caught fish on both sides of the pier, usually just down current of the pilings.
That makes about 50 black drum I have caught in three trips down to Sunset this month. It’s made a nice coda on a so-so year. I’m interested to find out in Jan and Feb if the drum really are year-round residents at the bridge. One thing is for sure: winter fishing is much more relaxing. No tourists, almost no boat traffic, and NO pinfish!
