You got a great deal! And it makes an excellent topwater rod. I have the same rod in the Tidemaster series paired with a Shimano Stradic 4000. For under $100 I'd recommend the Shimano Symetre, Sahara and the saltwater specific Spheros in the 4000 sizes. I'll admit that I'm biased when it comes to St. Croix rods and Shimano reels. An excellent bang for the buck is the Daiwa Regal Z in the 2500 - 4000 sizes.

7' is a little short for a jetty rod...

Love the St Croix rods - I have the 8' 1/2-2 oz one. If you want to fish the jetties/ocean areas I would go with a 9' rod such as the Tica 9' 1-3 oz spinner. You can get one for $40 on Ebay. Love mine!
