Opening day is the the 16/17 of April which ever one is on a Sunday. Huge ones haven't been caught in numbers but 42" has been caught from the middle bay from shore. I've been getting a lot of 24-30" footballs with fins. Most of the action was on the outgoing tides but the bigger ones I've been getting were on the incoming. Bloods are the choice of bait but I did see one guy get a nice 26" fatty with a piece of herring. The only people producing consistently from the shore were the long casters.

When is opening day? I heard a few have been caught on the Marshy Hope already. I hope they released them. Catch and release in the rivers for now.
Opening day is usually set to be late enough to allow a good number of spawning fish to make it into the protected rivers and not be killed. For the sake of catching a true trophy, the week leading up to opening day may be better than opening day itself. In some years where the winter is colder and longer, opening day will coincide with the main migration and its original intent fails. DNR established catch and release in non-spawning rivers and no targetting in spawning rivers. Hence, there are good numbers of fish up the rivers.

Fish in the 28-34 inch range can be either bay residents or migratory spawners. The resident fish (up to low 30's) are very active along shorelines now and will any typical striper lure or bait.

After seeing (and catching ) some of these cows, I cannot see myself keeping a keeper in the trophy season. The girth of these gals I've seen in these past 3 weeks reminded of the spring run 10yrs ago. Anyway, I may be hunting for flounder during that time.

Is it OK to use herring for bait now? I don't think it is.

How could you tell it was a piece of herring? My guess is that it was a piece of bunker. The fine is pretty stiff for having herring in MD unless it comes from a jar.;)
I love pickle herring in wine sauce. Not going to feed to the fish. LOL! I heard the large rock caught a few days ago in my area was caught on cut bluegill. Don't know if that is true or not.
