Sputnik for pomp's?

So I've always been a form believer in that your bait moving and rolling a little bit never hurt anything, and can actually help in many situations. Not as in just rolling down the beach and not holding all, but moving a little every now and then. I've almost never caught fish when using weight that just sticks in place and never moves.

On the other hand I keep reading where pompano fisherman will throw up to 4oz sputniks. I don't use floats as the other thread said, so maybe using floats works better for sticking it in one spot and not moving.

What are y'all's opinion on this? Shouldn't roll at all or not? Should I use floats if I'm going to stick it in one spot like that?

I have found that I get better circle hook sets on pomps using Sputniks, usually 4oz.
I know circle hook’s basically allow the fish to hook themselves but with a Sputnik, since it’s better anchored to the sand, that resistance really helps set the hook.
I also use smaller hooks than most, #2 and occasionally #1s.
No floats and let it roll ... if theres no one close, I like it to slowly roll with the current ... I call it huntin ...

Yeah, that's what I've always done. I want it to move some.

I guess I’m of the opposite opinion on this one. I throw a 5 oz breakaway sinker almost exclusively. There are days when I do throw a 4, but it’s rare. I fish PINS (TX) a lot & our surf can be rough. I also uptide / downtime as well. I’m throwing lines over the second & 3rd bars & the last thing I want to deal w/ is tangled lines that far out. As far as catching fish goes, I got plenty until our weather turned to crap in mid December.

How are u throwing 5 oz without ripping ur rigs? I use 20 lb rigs and I can’t throw anything easier than 4 oz. I would love to be able to use 5 oz.
I build my own clip down pulley rigs using 100 lb mono as my mainline & 80 lb mono as my secondary. It’s a bit more than most, but I expect more from it than the average gear as well.

Using shrimp / ghost shrimp, I’m throwing these rigs at distances of 600+ ft at times. Most people find it hard to believe until they see it, but I’m using a pendulum cast on the beach as well.

*FWIW, I do tournament casting as well.

There are guys out there who’re much better casters than me. You need to look no further than
YouTube.

I tried to upload a video of me casting, but the phone says it’s too big.

Yeah but… everything is different casting on a field vs on the sand.

Seven hundred is a poke, but it’s far from making you a badass caster. I’ve hit 750s w/ a casting rod / reel but I can’t imagine hitting that w/ a fishing rod / reel.

I’ll be the very first to tell you I don’t cast as well as Tommy Farmer in his day. I’m still chasing 800 ft on the casting field, which means I’ve got a long ways to go to be considered “great.”
