I went out this evening at a private spot a few miles south of spsp and caught about 8 white perch and 2 22" rockfish that were released. All caught on bloods. I think if I would have had fresh LY that might have attracted some larger rocks.

You might be fishing in my area. If you want size on rockfish, use lures exclusively. I have landed several over 30 inches this spring. Also, these are NOT migratory spawners.

The perch are started to return to their summer haunts, but not quite in the shallows nor up the creeks yet. BW on bottom rigs seems to be working. I fish for perch when they start hitting small lures in the shallows.

bluefish, when will you start to fish for white perch in shallow water with lures? That's what I am waiting for. I moved back to MD. from FL. in late May last year and started catching them in shallow water with lures, and caught them all summer off piers in Oxford MD. I don't know when they started moving in this area. I will have to check it out. Might be some now. PS. Getting tired of catching crappie. Need some perch.

I typically start perching when the stripers disappear back into the bay. In the past, this was anywhere from mid May to June. Some fish are probably still around, but I will go from almost always catching one to 1 out of every 3-5 outings. Also, I believe stripers will hit any perch jig if it is dangled next to their nose

With perch, I just wait and observe others catching or see perch hanging next to bulkheads and pilings on days when there is the water visibiility is 3'+. The perch that are being caught right now are holding on hard bottom (reefs and even man-placed boulders) anywhere from 4 to 20ft deep. When I start seeing them caught by people using grass shrimp under a bobber casting no more than 15 yards from shore, I can start perch casting. They usually stay around all the way into October.

Good post. So, I have a kayak, and plan this year to hang-out around a bay bridge pylon (launching at SPSP). Would that be a good place to catch perch at???

I would recommend you stay safe and launch at Jonas Green to wander into the various Severn River creeks. They should be loaded with white perch by June. Cast jigs, beetlespins, or spinners towards structure in 2-6ft of water. It is far more fun and lures ensure most if not all of your perch will be of size. Look for deep docks, downed trees, seawalls, and floating debris. Most docks that hold perch will continue to hold perch on most outings. Those that don't are probably not worth wandering into for the future.

If you insist on perch fishing launching from SPSP, I would recommend Dolly's Lump (a little bite south of the bridge along the Western shore). This is a common area for boaters to load up on bottom fish with BW's. At least 75% of the fishing boats are trolling up and down the bay right now- can't tell if the perch are there or not.

Bluefish: I'm not the most coordinated guy in the world. I've taken my kayak out at SPSP, and I feel nervous about the bigger waves. I'll follow your advice about Jonas Green.

Best Regards,
Stan
