Been talking with my dad about doing a spring 'trip' since I will probably miss all the surf fishing this summer and he mentioned that he'd be interested in trying his hand at some of the ponds/streams that Maryland stocks with trout. My gear is set up for/built around surf and pier fishing (Penn Battle 5000 with 30lb braid on a 7ft Med-Heavy Ugly Stikk is my 'lightest' set up). Would I be able to give the trout fishing a go with that sort of gear or am I going to need to go purchase something else?

Thanks!

Dicks has the 6'6" Daiwa Samurai combos on sale now two for $35. Thats exactly what I use for trout in the stocked lakes.

Solesolace, I agree with the others. You need to be thinking in terms of light or ultra light spinning gear. Check out Quantum Teton Trout spinning rods too. You can get them alone or as a combo.
I have a couple of the rods in 7', paired with various spinning reels. Great for panfishing or trout.

I do have a Samurai 1500 size reel on one of them, and that works well. The rods are usually about $25, and combo's less than $45.

Thanks for the feedback! I figured I'd need to buy something new, but wanted to check with the people in the know. I have trouble throwing 3/8oz lures with my surf set ups (use some Kastmasters for perch off the piers), so I figured the lighter stuff I needed for trout would be a no go on that equipment. I was looking at buying something like a Penn Fierce II and another Ugly Stik, but the wife wasn't having it. Good to know a cheap combo could do the trick. My fishing is going to be severely limited in the near future and freshwater seems like it would be easier for me to access for a quick Saturday morning or afternoon after work trip, but I didn't think my gear would cut it.

Walmart has a 2 pc med ugly stik. It has cork handles with blue and yellow trim. It's a 7'. Lures size are 1/4 to 3/8 oz. I keep it as my spare rod. The setup I use mostly for bass and trout or panfish is a okuma reflections rod. 7' as well but the rod is rated for 1/4 to 1 oz lures. Paired it with a 2500 penn conflicts spooled with 10 lbs braid. Yes I understand the reel is a little overkill in the drag department but your able to use it as a nice all around setup. Just adjust the settings. Line wise most folks will say 10 lbs is to high for trout, hence the braid. Some folks say the fish see the line so a simple solution is a mono or floro leader.
