Tsunami is a great rod for plugs , I use the 9 ' at the inlet. Surf I use a 9' Star rod steller, you can get either rod for under 100 bucks and get a BTL2 Penn reel. you should be at your price or a little more. the star might be more than the tsunami. Tight lines.:D

I'd suggest going with something like an Ugly Stik Elite with either a Penn Battle or Fierce in the 3000-4000 range. Not bad to cast all day and it'll come in just under $150 (little less with the Fierce). Elites are nice because they're lightweight, relatively sensitive, and still have the single piece stainless steel guides. No muss, no fuss.

Went and looked at my rods this morning and forgot that I picked up a 9' BPS inshore extreame for metal (purchased it and only got to use it once before I have been pulled back from the beach time :()
Anyway it was $129 but a nice rod. Will go over budget with the Reel also but if you can find one used it is a good deal

Yep.. the way it breaks down is that I am Bait Caster guy.. (2) Blue Yonders (2)7000C3 I know.. I know.. but you dance with the one you brought and that is also the one I married for years now.. LOL!! So this will be my first spinning setup.. I saw a guy with about a 7.5 St. Croix rod and a shimano spinning reel and he was getting great distance working gulp and also throwing 52M series mirror lures while I was at the beach a few weeks back.. So I figured to try and get a setup to try out.. I want to thank everyone for their input!!

I agree with all that CCP makes some killer rods but remember his budget of $150 for the set up

Yeah I hear you. But I've made the mistake of not getting the right rod and in about a year was wishing I had spent the extra money. Then I would end selling the cheaper stuff and getting what I should have to start with. But I admit, I am a little bit of an equipment HO.
