Over the past 2 years I have noticed a large increase in shrimping boats at a popular spot at the beach I fish, AND a decrease in success at that spot. Do you think the boats' nets have an impact on the fishing or is it just standard decline of spots because of storms and such.

I have fished OI for the past 4 years in late October and/or early November.. To me the point does not produce anymore since the did the beach re-nourishment on the West end. Was down there the week after the hurricane this year but stayed in Caswell.. never made it to the point.. nor wanted to. We slayed them at Caswell

I am yet to try Caswell. I've all but given up on the point. Dredging destroyed the bite.

There's a clear link between shrimp boats pulling in tons of bycatch and damage to fish populations--mountains of data in google. Like everything else it's about striking the right balance between fisheries.

Shrimp landings increased by 94 percent in 2015 to 9.1 million pounds, the highest since 2008. Shrimp landings in 2015 had an estimated ex-vessel value (fisherman sale to fish house) of $16.8 million, a 19 percent increase over 2014. Source

Now whether that means there were more shrimp to be caught, or if the industry deployed more boats with more hours on the water I have no idea.

"It is estimated that for every pound of shrimp harvested in North Carolina waters, over four pounds of non-target catch, including juvenile finfish, are discarded,” the petition says

"North Carolina is the only state on the East Coast that still allows shrimp trawling in sounds and rivers."
Well I guess this settles it... IMO shrimping ruins spots :( but... I like shrimp, just wish they did it elsewhere :fishing:

I saw some hidden video of some shrimpers and the bycatch was awful. I saw in arguments about those videos that they have had to change nets that helped reduce the bycatch. It was pretty powerful stuff though.
I couldn't tell what was shrimp and what were crabs, finfish nothing.
But, in another article I read, the amount of shrimpers has collapsed in NC. So there has to be another piece to the puzzle as to why fishing has dropped off.
Could be cyclical, could be more recs as well as more efficient coms.
idk.
I cannot believe they allow shrimp trawling in our estuaries like they still do. That is almost a no brainer.

I like seeing shrimp boats offshore, always a good thing to catch some fish off of. But when there coming up and down the beach and in the inlet, there snatching all the smaller fish that people are they to catch. The money won't matter when the amount of tourist that come to fish don't have anything to catch anymore
