Waiting for my Shimano Stradic FK-4000XGFK to arrive at the door today. I had a 4500b Baitrunner for 7 years or so and was cranking it as i possibly could the other day and the gears failed. I tried taking it apart and I didn't see anything stripped, but it still just wasn't right. If you know anything about reels, their is a piece called the oscilator that rides on the main shaft. I have a feeling i didn't get that right. I don't know where along the shaft it should be tightened down. I just guessed.
Funny, i actually sold the bail part of it emmediately on ebay yesterday. I bidded $142 on the Stradic. Costs $210 at Walmart! Can't wait to get my first big one on it. I have another baitrunner (forgot the model, bout same price) and it was scuffed up. I used a black marker to touch up the lever, then used some clear nail polish over it. Hope it holds.

Nice! I bought mine (ST4000XGFK) from Amazon last year for $178 so I'd say you got a pretty good deal. I've bought a few reels from ebay, but don't forget to read the fine print. I recently bought a wrong model and started a return process, only to find that there's a 20% restocking fee associated with it. Fortunately though, the seller said he would waive the restocking fee if I bought another reel (correct model) from him, which I did.

The biggest fish I hooked on the Stradic was a huge butterfly ray that I knew I wasn't going to be able to land. It was nice to see the smooth drag action before the line snapped. It's my favorite spinning reel in the 4k class.

I'm using 30lb braid for bridge and pier fishing. On the jetty, I actually have been using baitcasters and conventionals, partly because I don't want my gear to collect dust. Even on the jetty though, I am using 30lb braid with 50lb fluorocarbon or mono leader (to handle abrasion against rocks). I use 50lb braid for wreck fishing from a boat.

What are you targeting on the jetty? I've been mainly targeting Tautogs... They're my new favorite species to fish for (I caught them for the first time this year). It's too cold to fish them from jetties now (at least for me), so I am looking to get on a boat shortly.
