Made an end of school year camping trip with the family. I got to say fishing is a lot harder with an 8yr old and a 2 yr old. On trips fishing no longer takes priority. In 3 days we put in about 6 hours on the beach total. Can't wait for the little one to catch the bug and turn that around.
6/9 we hit the sand just about low tide and started with bait rigs. Shrimp getting beat up as soon as it hit the water. We got a few pin fish and one sea mullet in the hour or so we fished. One pup shark on the big rod
6/10 We got an "early" breakfast and we hit a hole about 11 am just before high. Again pin fish galore. Managed a 13.75" trout too. A few more pup sharks and a 2lb blue on the big rod. All in about 2 hours. Met up with a great bud for a few minutes and BSed to catch up briefly. On the way out saw a couple with a kid stuck. Asked how they were doing and before I could pull away I was tied up to them and pulled them out to where they could get back. My ridgeline pulled a full sized dodge 1500 backwards about 200 yards. Uh huh! Go ahead jeb. ;)
6/11. Hit the sand about 12 and again all the pins you could get and feed. I was determined to catch on fleas but even those got the snot beat out of them. Just no time for anything else to hit. No takers on the cut blue, pin heads or anything on the big rod. But I showed my kid how to bogie board, we dug fleas and momma showed off her work out/diet regime in a two piece for the first time in a couplefew years.
What I learned is that camping is hard with a two year old, fishing is harder, and kids are different creatures. My patients needs some more work or more bourbon.
KBSPOTCHASER I'll see you in the fall, Firespyder I'll see you soon for a boat ride. WAM and the gang, can't wait, already counting down. I hate living so far from the beach.

Great report Gilly, glad you were able to catch a few, and more glad you are able to provide hope for those of us missing our old fishing lifestyle. I've been jonesing pretty badly lately, but can't make it down.

My 22 month old is on the tail end of his afternoon nap now, so I'm taking this opportunity to look at reports! He has been on our little jon boat in the family farm pond, where he enjoyed splashing in the water that entered the boat via slow leaks in ancient rivets. He also enjoyed playing with the small bass I caught, and he must have enjoyed playing with Mommy's Falcon rod with Daiwa SS 700 reel, because it mysteriously disappeared from the boat while he was proximal to it. We didn't even notice it had gone missing until I suggested that Mommy toss the small swimbait tied to it along a line of lily pads. It will turn up eventually, even if it means snagging every stick in the bottom of the pond via weighted treble on a stiff trolling rod.

Ever let the 8 y/o take pinfish on light tackle? Grandpa used to hook me up with a little spinning combo and a bag of shrimp when he would work on his docked boat at Wrightsville, kept me happy for hours and I even managed a few desirable fish over the years!

I am leaving in the morning for Kure Beach and I hope to have some fun and try my very best to convert a 8 year old "PETA Princess" to a fisherman. Currently she loves every living creature with the exception of the camel crickets in the basement

The 8yr old is a seasoned fisherman. He's landed a few 4-6' sharks with dad's assistance. He's good at catching bait when he's in the mood. My youngest is 23 mo...close enough to 2 yr. He's in his second beach trip. We went in April but was in pants and long shirt the whole time. This time he just wasn't digging the sand after getting wet. He's such a hard headed kid. He'll get it soon.
