What options are available for shipping a rod? Tubes? Cardboard or PVC? Post office, Fed ex, ups? Insurance? The rod in question would be 1 piece 5'8

Go to Lowes in the carpet department... See if they have some cardboard tubes that carpet came on. Usually they will give it to you is you ask for it. Cut the tube about 4 inches longer than you need to. So in your case cut it 72 inches. Wrap the Rod up in some Bubble wrap if you want. Put bubble wrap on both ends for a cushion.

Then tape it up good and ship it Fed Ex Ground/ or UPS is probably the least expensive depending were you go. Office Depot uses Fed Ex Ground they tend to be cheaper than going to a "UPS Store"

If you don't like the idea of using s card board tube then buy a pice of PVC pipe.

4" pvc tube drain tube cut 3-4" longer than the rod. Use packing paper, bubble wrap or even old newspaper to wrap around and protect the guides. Use the same (crumpled paper or bubble wrap) to cushion the ends. Cut 4" square cardboard for the endcaps. Tape on and fold the square corners down then tape securely. Packing tape or duct tape works great. I use FEDEX for most rods but you can go UPS or USPS as well. Insure for value and let her ship!!!
