Anyone know where I can order a rod rest like this? Can't seem to find any place in US that will sell this. I find this setup helpful when fishing the surf since I don't have to pull out the rod to set the hook.

or something like this, model 8000.

I'd be affraid of loosing my rod in a rig like that. At best you're only going to get the rod at 45 degrees. You need to get it at 90 degrees or your line will be in the wash. I use 2" dia PVC 4' long and drive about 2' of that in the sand. The rod rest you've pictured is used more for carp fishing. Hope to see you at the SPSP clean-up.

Thanks Catman for the input. I have PVC type of rod holder. I didn't know you had to put it on a 90 degree angle. Someone told me to lean it little bit.

Well, I guess I have no need for those holders.

Hi Jangwuah,
Longranger and myself have used Breakaway tripods for surf fishing for the past three years. They can hold up to 3 surf rods and are very stable. Never had it pulled over. Have used it while surf fishing in FL, NC, VA, MD, and NJ. You can position your rod so that it is high or low depending on the surf conditions. Check www.breakawayusa.com and then go to the Breakaway UK site.

Jangwuah,
I have that asian tripod...it's junk. The leg clamps kept breaking everytime I applied pressure to lock it closed. Had the thing replaced and the same thing happened all over again.

Take the advice of the others here and look into something of quality. Longcaster mentioned he carries tripods too.

I think they would be great in the bay but I have some reservations about using them in the Atlantic surf. I have seen too many rods bent over when a large bass or drum hits and these rod holders would be swimming in the wash. I almost lost my rod at AI last Summer fishing for sharks. Good thing the tube was really jammed in the sand or I would have lost it. I'll stick with the normal PVC/angle iron configuration except maybe this year move up to a 5' tube instead of a 4' one.
