So Ive been fishing since I was young but just bought my first conventional reel a few weeks ago. Im heading down to Frisco, NC in a few weeks and plan to fish from drum and cobia. After lots of research I decided to buy the daiwa sl30sh. I plan on spooling with 20lb test and 40lb test for topshot and fishing from the beach. Well today I took a trip over to bass pro and saw they had a good sale on rods and picked up the bps offshore angler powerstick 12ft. It felt really nice in my hands and the weight of the rod was really nice. The problem is I did all of my research on reels and not the rod. I now see this rod is listed as a spinning rod. Will this work for my application? Whats the difference between the 2 rods?

it will cast but not very good the size and spacing of the guides are different and you will want at least 50 lb for the topshot. take it back and get the casting version

Thanks for the info on the topshot. What rod do you recommend I exchange it for in the $100 price range? Thats what I end up getting when a bps employee starts to help me and ask what kind of fishing I'll be doing.

I just got the 12' BPS Breakwater 100 bucks

we all have to start somewhere as long as it's a conventional rod and proper weight range you'll be fine

Have you tried it yet? How do you like it? I had that pole in my right hand and the power stick in my left and the employee said the powerstick was a way better pole.

I'm no expert it's going to be awhile before I master this conventional casting game yes I like it

I don't know if it's a better choice but I do know I don't put too much stock in what a sales person tells me
