I find the article interesting and i always figured that bringing a fish out of the water for any length of time is bad. That being said the only bill fish I have a picture of (Blue Marlin) tail wrapped itself on the 5th run and had to be taken out of the water. This shows the stupidity of regulation. There is never a be all end all solution. Should you try to keep fish in the water, imagine if someone forcefully held you underwater.

One major factor left out of this article: water temperature. Mortality when temperatures are low is near 0%, since colder water holds more dissolved oxygen. But doing C&R when water is really warm leads to high mortality, since the fish is already having a hard time getting enough oxygen before it was hooked, fought, and then pulled out of the water. I've watched half the puppy drum I caught go belly up during a really bad heat wave, while catching stripers on a cold March day saw every single fish take off like a bat out of hell when unhooked.

Get 'em back quickly in every case, but if it's hot keep release times to under 30 seconds.

Good point about temperature and survival inshore.
Offshore the surface may be warm but 15' down is a lot cooler so i think the type of hook and
keeping them in the water played a bigger role in fish survival than temperature.
All the fish in that survey swam away. The tags showed what happened afterward.
Looks like circle hooks and keeping them in the water where possible is the best chance of survival.

I absolutely agree about hot water and survival. As stated probably more of an issue inshore. Also, in warm water leave the ultralight stuff at home. The sooner caught and released the better chance for survival. I was shocked some years back when IGFA added all the light line classifications. best - glenn

That is a very good article. I have been saying that for years. Better to catch a limit and stop fishing for more. In FL. you are not allowed to take certain fish out of water. A lot of people fish for trout in FL. Trout are one easy fish to catch. They catch and release 40-50-100 trout and brag about it. I use to tell some of my friends about this. Catch your four trout limit, then stop. Fish for something else. I also have a problem with catch and release trolling for rock fish/stripers in the spring. But it is not against the law. Just my opinion.

andypat, I agree 100%. Here in NC some people catch 11 / 12 in trout almost every cast and brag about catching 60 / 70 fish. THEY HAVE DONE NOTHING TO BRAG ABOUT!! Lips and jaws torn loose, ripped mouths, etc. Do lips, jaws, mouth tears grow back? I do not know. Brag about nice trout, not "hammer handles". Hope this freeze does here in NC does not do too much damage to the population. thanks - glenn

I know, it's not nice and it makes the rest of us look bad.
