Always used bait, never tossed lures in the surf.

Also what spinning rod would works best? Length / line weight / lurer weight?

Not looking to spend a lot.

Been a few years since I have posted.

welcome back, Orest. (I remember your avatar from a few years back) I've also been out for a spell and just now getting refreshed. And, also have the same question about the lures. Suffering from Rotator Cuff issues, there is no way I can sling anything past the breakers. So I'm going to be limited to walking the beach and just tossing things into the surf for awhile. Last year, I watched a Filipino lady with a 7' med rod and spinning reel walk up and down the beach tossing shrimp, cut mullet belly strips and some kind of spoon lure and she went home with a stringer full of pomps and whiting. So I know that works in my area. Hopefully, you can find what works in your area. Please keep us in the loop.

Thanks for the info.

it has been a few years since I have been fishing.

2 bad knees and 2 partial knee replacement surgeries and getting into RC cars with my son.

I hope to fish more often, but getting older it take more time to mow almost 3 acres of grass and wash and detail 4 cars.

when I got into surf fishing I lived about 40 miles from Sandy Point State Park, 2 moves later I am 60 miles away.

But the wife and I are headed to Ocean City, MD in September after the holiday. Would like to sling some lures.

I mostly soak bait, so I can't speak from a lot of experience, but here is what's popular in Delaware/ocean city area. For flounder a 1 or 2 oz jig head or bucktail with some trailer like gulp worked slow as parallel to shore as possible. Trying to bump along inside the ditch created by the breakers.
Blue fish will hit all kinds of metal like spoons, deadly dicks, etc.
SP minnows are popular for stripers, especially after dark.
Don't count out soaking bait. Some fish bites on a top and bottom rig with 2 oz and a 20 yard cast can get you plenty of action in September. Especially those delicious kingfish. Best of luck!!

Orest,

How long are you going to be in OC?

Sandcrab
Just a few nights. Need to get away from, still working as a federal contractor, we been working from home since March 2020. I have 10' Allstar Ben Doerr rated to 3 oz's, so I am going to try my luck throwing some mental. All my other rods are 12' and rated to big weights.

Orest,,

Enjoy your vacation.

All Star rods? I still have two 10'6" Allstar "Spanish Buster" rods (1-3 oz) I built way back in 2002. They are still my go to rods on the surf for slinging metal.

I've done really well with Fishbites in bloodworm, crab, and sanflea flavors. I have not bought fresh bloodworms in years...

Last month I hooked a really large ray at AI that kicked my butt on my heaver. It was loaded with a large kingfish head. Big baits, big fish.

Take care,

Sandcrab

Thanks for the info on Fishbites, I always wondered if they worked. Can't image the coast of blood worms these days.

They usually run about $12+ a dozen. I get the super large ones for $15 but that's only for 8 of them. 1 of the jumbos is equal to at least 2 or 3 skinny woms. At least you can thread the jumbos on decent sized circle hook.

Try 3/4 or 1oz Crippled Herrings!
