Hey everyone,

I'm in need of a new surf reel. It's going to need to be a spinning reel, and it will be used for soaking bait. It's going on a 10' Penn Prevail spinning rod rated for 15-30 pound mono, 20-50 pound braid, and 1-5 ounces of weight - so I'm trying to create a setup that should catch anything I'm likely to run across in the surf, save for those bull reds and sharks (for those I'm building a surf rod for my Ambassadeur BG 7000). Is that rod a good rod at all?

So preferably the reel should be matched to the rod, both in size and color. The rod is probably 98% black, with red accents on it. So, probably a black or red and black reel.

As for my budget, hoping to keep it close to the $75 mark at Bass Pro Shops, since I've got a few gift cards saved up.

Thank for your help!

IMO 4000-5000 difference isn't too big of a deal, but since it's soaking bait and I assume you will be spiked, I would use the 5000 to be on the safe side. But it's all preference some people prefer weight over a few extra yards of line capacity.

Sounds like the Fierce 5000 will suit my purposes well for surf fishing. So my arsenal will consist of the 10' rod with the 5000 Fierce, a 10-12 foot custom with an Ambassadeur 7000, and then a 6'6" 40-80 with my rebuilt 9/0 (which should be done around this weekend).

Can't wait to get out on the water! Just learned that my friend's grandparents own a private access to a beach nearby, and it's pretty isolated so nobody really uses the beach there. Looks like I've got a new fishing spot!

I like the reel - not sure how I didn't think of one earlier.

Are you sure about a 4000 though? Seems small, considering i'm using a 5000 battle for heavier inshore fishing (mostly bull reds, with shark, cobia, jacks, etc mixed in).
easy.......penn fierce 4000.....$70....nice reel and colors match

Im with fish buckets on this one.4k.

You already have a 5k battle and a9/0 for soaking baits and those would be your spiked setup.

I would use the Penn prevail you have for lighter game with a 4k fierce. Like fish bucket suggest. That prevail 1-5 oz realistically. Sweet spot just guessing is probly 3-4 oz .I would use this setup to catch my bait and small game will soaking the other two.no need to all 3 rods setup doing all the same thing.

The 5k battle is an inshore setup, not planning on using for surf. I might actually trade it for a 4000, and then buy a 6000 for bigger fish as well.

I do not surf websites looking to sell gear, but I saw your post about a reel. I have a Penn SS650 which has never been used. I have two but I use one. I bought them a couple of years ago from a surplus buyer/seller. They were from Dicks Sporting Goods. I have had excellent luck with the one I use and have caught 30 pound bull reds in the surf on line as light as 17 lb. mono. If you want the unused reel, how about $60? I am in NC at this time. Let me know if you are interested.
