I'm not sure what the official name is for this rig...or if it even has one...but I have seen pictures of it while researching rigs on the web. It comes in a few different variations, but basically it just looks like a cannonball/fish finder rig, but with an extra dropper loop and hook positioned about 15-30 inches above the cannonball/ff rig. So it seems like a hybrid between a FF and a high/low rig.

Would this be a good rig for puppy drum in the surf?

I've noticed that a lot of folks use very heavy leaders (up to 80 or 100 lb test) for their drum rigs. But for rigs being tied to specifically target pups/slot sized is it OK to scale back to 20 lb fluorocarbon?

Is a puppy drum and a slot drum the same thing? I hear these terms used a lot...
some folks seem to use them interchangeably...but others seem to imply that a slot is larger than a pup??

Thank you!

Slot means between regulations size Min-max to keep legally .

Puppy drums are a young drum with spots on the tail.once a puppy drum gets big enough usually over 35plus inches it a a red bull drum. Red bull drum aren't good to eat usually worms .

20Lb will do but I use 30lb .

Basic Carolina rig is all you need .. And cast well.

Yes, I realized that "slot" meant that it was within the min/max length to be legal. I just wasn't clear on if a pup can also be a slot...or if "puppy" only refers to the fish below the legal size limit?

I believe you're talking about a chip Stevens rig.
Under 18" rat
18" -30" puppy drum
30-40" yearling
40+ drum
50+ old warrior
That's the way I was always explained it. Drumdum just posted that somewhere on this site and he's forgotten about more drum than I've caught

I would guess a Chip Stevens rig? I'm sure it would work fine. I just use a fishfinder rig personally with some mullet heads/chunks. You can use a regular 2 hook bottom rig too. They're not that picky...

80-100 is for big drum. And not because the drum have teeth, but because of sharks and bluefish that pick up your baits. I've fished with 40 and 50 lb leaders off a pier where you can't land sharks so you get bit off if it's not a drum. 20 lb is fine for for what you want, but the bluefish and small sharks will drive you crazy with cutoffs. They're not particularly leader shy so 30-50 might be better.

Don't over think it. If you're fishing where they are they'll eat about any bait you have out...sand fleas, crabs, fresh shrimp, cut mullet, spot, bluefish...

Research the "Owen Lupton" rig very good for Pups and above if you're not trying to long cast it
I looked it up...'ain't Google grand...but isn't that rig specifically designed for boat fishing (where a slack line often cannot be avoided) for bull drum? The purpose of the short leader is to prevent gut hooking fish that you intend to release...and it seems like that egg sinker would roll around a lot in the surf. Do you use these for surf fishing, and if so, do you use the egg sinker or rig it a different way? I suppose you could just put a loop, slide or swivel where the egg sinker is and then use pyramid sinkers.

Thanks for the info. And...Yeah, I realize I'm over thinking it...I do that with everything, not just fishing...drives my wife crazy! Reminds me of something one of my in-laws used to say when we would be discussing deer hunting strategy..."if the deer were as smart as some of you guys think they are, then you'd better not leave your keys in the truck!" The problem is I love surf fishing, but don't get to do it very often since I don't make it to the coast but 2-3 times a year. That leaves a lot of time in between to daydream about it, research it, chat on forums, etc. I have gotten a wealth of info off of this forum and always appreciate the feedback I get.

I use a 2 hook Hi lo rig (either river rig style or dropper loop style) tied with 60lb mono on a smaller rod and a fishfinder tied with 60lb mono on my bigger rod. 6/0 hooks for filets on the Hi/lo. 8/0 or bigger for fish heads on the fishfinder.
