Puppy, speck, bluefish & shad in Rudee, VA, Apr 23, 2023

The long period waves at the beach, not the wind, was too strong and high for the kayak launch for tautog fishing at CBBT (Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel).
I decided to fish Rudee instead.

I learned immediately that the fishing in March and April in Rudee this year hasn't been as good as usual. The slot size puppies haven't been abundant, and specks never been there in full force.
We didn't have a good day in catching. Few puppies caught were over 26" and a few specks over 18" were caught.

I saw 2 flounders caught, one at 22" the other at 18".

I caught 3 puppies over 29", and 5 specks over 17" out of 18. My bigest one was 23".
I caught my 1st bluefish of the year, and caught a shad. The shad was a new species for me.

Fishing Log;

Thanks
Joe

A large bluefish or an edible size bluefish? Also shad smell terrible.

All personal preferences, I think. Here is my preference.
I have my own rule about the fish I catch. I tried the first fish of every species I caught if keeping was legal. I tried American shad once decades ago. To me, shad are just for fun. I tried a bluefish at 35". The fillet looked awful, full of bloody meat, and not firm. It wasn't worth to even cook. To me, the edible size bluefish is under 18" based on the smell, meat quality, taste and also based on the cook.
I tried a snakehead at 30". Snake head is quality food without fishy smell. All white firm meat it is. But, I keep sneak head to give away only.
I rare eat puppy drum. I love to catch specks. But I don't eat specks at all. I love mullet - very fish. They are good when fried. I love to eat spot, croaker (fishy),white perch and ribbon fish.
I rarely eat sheepshead and spadefish. I love triggerfish. I eat and I decide. I keep stripers, tautog and flounders for me. I keep blue cat under 22" to give away. Crapie, yellow perch and freshwater trout are tasty. I am very inconsistent.

My wife loves all fishes.

Still looked like a good day fishing. Down in NC last month was terrible fishing. Thanks for sharing Joe!
