I found an intersting section in a book, entitled "Sportsman's Digest of Spin-Fishing" by Hal Sharp, ( 1957 ).
It talks about a method of preserving baits, "Old School" . . . Article below
PRESERVING BAITS
Fish will often not strike a Formaldehyde and Glycerin preserved bait more than once, because it is so distasteful or they reject it before you can hook them.
Here is a preservative for keeping baits a year, in tightly closed jars.
Dissolve 1/2 lb of Salt in 1 Qt. of Distilled Water or Rain Water and add 1/4oz. of Salicylic Acid ( Aspirin ). Pack jars with fresh bait and pour in brine to fill. Screw lid tight.
Fish repeatedly strike this bait !
Tight Lines !
