Murrells Inlet area, ocean and inlet............

October 2nd, NE winds, surf full of mullet and menhaden...........caught all the blues you could want.............1/2 - 1 lb average with several 3-4 lbers.......then evacuation.

October 17th-18th...........SE,SSE winds...........surf full of mullet and menhaden............reds and whiting..........one legal red and three others.........36", 36", and 39".......caught on whole finger mullet, 6" or so using 10/0 hooks on Hatteras style rigs. Yesterday wind switched to SW, water temp back around 80, muddy water.........and nothing but pinfish.

Most bottom species being caught on FRESH shrimp...........nothing ocean side on artificial bloodworms or shrimp but the fish in the inlet are hitting both. Go figure.

Still lots of trash in the ocean and on the beach. Most all walkways from the dune line to the beach have been destroyed. Most main channel docks, as well as the last 300' of the dock where we stay has been destroyed. Can't access the oyster bars where I love to fly fish.

Hey Flathead,
Glad you made it this year. I arrived at Ocean Lakes yesterday saw a guy catch a nice red yesterday afternoon north of the campground so I thought allrighty, lol I caught a nice whiting this morning and some short black drum on a short rod. Went this afternoon and only a 1oz pomp and about 40 lbs of grass (I'm thinking grass from all the dunes that washed out in the ocean) :-( so I got tired of hauling in grass and left earlier than planned. No mullet in the surf. My wife and I rode down to Surfside around lunch and saw the effects of Matthew, beach accesses torn up and people removing sand everywhere. From Ocean Lakes to Surfside at high tide the beach is skinny for sure. Going to try to catch some fresh bait tomorrow since fishing will probably be poor and I'm needing bait.
I've had 3 different guys tell me they fished before Matthew, had mullet in the surf and killed the Reds...just my luck, :D
Good Luck to Ya'!!

No bait in the surf today either, at least close enough to wade out and throw a cast net. Managed to get some in the inlet and get one 16 1/2" flounder.

Those guys were correct. Also, friends here with me witnessed lots of reds caught from the GC pier 10/17 and 10/18.Winds WSW today should be another so, so day. Two guys staying here have a boat and spent all day yesterday riding from the inlet to the GC pier, HBSP, the jetty, and the creeks without catching a single mullet.Could've been due to the day long sipping of suds tho. :D Spots are being slayed in the inlet. At least 20 boats at the end of our dock all day yesterday, catching. Catching 100 baby pinfish to every one fishing size mud minnow in my traps.
