I use lacrosse balls and realize they are not very aerodynamic. However, I am working on technique more than anything. Distance will be a by product of good technique once you hit the beach.
I start with the tennis ball, after some casts I'll go to a bank sinker usually 5 oz., like to get some casts in before I have to walk out to retrieve the sinker stuck in the field, I don't need a tournament sinker or stingsilver or water.

I also like to use tennis balls for practice casting!
I use the tennis balls the way they describe, with a slit in one end and a tiny hole in the other, where I just stick the shock leader through the hole, then loop it right through the sinker and pull it back into the tennis ball!
I have them set up two ways, one left normal, this will teach you how to cast slowly and smoothly the hard way! If you try to overpower it, you will almost always overrun and that helps with your form!
The other tennis ball is set up the same way, except it’s completely covered with bright electrical or duct tape to help it cut through the wind!
Also, if I woods a few or crack-off, I can find them!

Yeah, no rangefinder for me lol!
I just clip my trusty, little line counter on my rod blank, and then retrieve as I’m walking, that way I know exactly how many yards I casted with no guessing!
I also use the line counter when I spool all my reels up as well, just makes life so much easier knowing exactly how much line capacity I have on all my reels!

A fat "plug" for water casting practice. 7" x 1.5", 4.5ozs and it floats. Turned from pine, drilled and filled with lead, hook-eye at one end, and slathered in epoxy. Just need to spray it white for visibility.

Chunking in the back yard, altered my mechanics a bit, and got 145 yds lased with 6.5 oz on geeks 6-16 build and dirty 525Mag. I could def tell speed fell off at the end. Still not bad. I haven't been in that reel since I bought it in 2002. Added a Torque handle and getting some hybrid 7's for it that should stretch a few more yards out of it after I polish the internals. The rod barley loads with 6 oz. It would easily throw 12, if all the bars were closed and I had to go fish 12 oz surf instead.
