I have always used a 7ft rod med/heavy for a good all around pier rod, I like something 6.6ft medium/light for casting lures that is just my preference. you can find some decent prices at Wal-mart, If you go to Princess anne distributing on 17th st. in V.B. they will match you up a combo for what kind of fishing you will be doing. It might be a little more than Wal-mart but you will leave with a rod and reel that will last you a ggod while.
I myself have only been salt-fishing for a little over a year now, but I've had the same type of pole the whole time. I use an eight-foot medium/heavy pole and I've always used 3-ounce weights unless the water is really rough.
