Thanks for linking that, excellent. Don't think people here actually target skate that big, they're more of a by catch. They can end up being 2.5 beer fish;)

Dam, you can't go anywhere and get away from those things. Somebody needs to come up with a good recipe for them. Maybe if they would put a limit on em, you wouldn't be able to buy a bite.

They do pull a bit :) The guys are getting them in about 20 feet of water and with a 50 yard cast. I know they wont be happy until they get a 200lb fish!

Wow. That thing looks just like the Clearnose Skates we get on the East Coast of the US. (except it's about ten times as big)

During the summer i was on ov pier and hooked into a cownose around that size. I had little to no control for a few seconds, it surfaced,i saw it and then the snap broke.

Anyone remember last years 250 lb butterfly off sea gull on 25 lb test?

We do get various other skates and rays that are much smaller than the common skate, blonde ray grows to around 30lb and the thornback to around 20lb.

This is a butterfly ray and the little man that caught him after Christmas 2006 at the Point on Cape Hatteras.

On this side of the pond we refer to this size as a "car hood". I would suppose on your side it would be an "auto bonnet". LOL!

I remember when fishing as a lad on the East coast of England around East Lane and Shingle St., Suffolk. The old boys used to say that you used to be able to walk across the river Ore on the backs of skate. Gone now. Been fished out. Not in this neck of the woods though. People call them a nuisance fish. Even a car hood. No one specialises in catching rays . I've even seen them leave skate on the piers to die because they were "interfering" with the other fishing. Bastagies:mad:
