Typical Penn "black and gold" class reel, even smoother than the last series. Great reel for the money (even Chinese built) keep it clean and it will last until you're ready to hand it to the next generation of fishermen in the family.

I have the 8500 and I can't say anything bad about but it isn't in the rotation that often. I have full trust and faith in it and it has preformed better than I expected every time I've used it but I just don't need another reel that size and want the 6500 MPU instead so I'll use it more. I know a couple guys who have them (in various sizes) and every one of them likes them. Good family of reels with nice build and features at a good price, not the best reels in the world but not bank busters either.

I have the 6500 bail-less and I like it for the most part. Doesn't lay the line down as clean as I'd like but other than that it it's a tank. Good bang for the buck. Not a true water proof reel but I don't dunk my reels so it serves me just fine. I got it on #bay for 129.00 plus shipping which was cheaper than most places. I wish they had the bail-less in a 5500 or 4500.

I have the 7500. I use it for surf fishing and I really like it. Very smooth and a nice drag system. The only negative I have is that there is no ant-reverse if that is important to you.
Flip the little switch that's somewhere on the body of the reel or have it repaired the reel should have anti reverse.
