I took my family to Ocean City for a one night trip. We got to our hotel at 10:45pm on 5/19 and I was out at the pier by 11:30pm. On 5/19, I went by myself to scope it out... I wanted to make sure that my wife and kids would be able to catch something the next day. On 5/20, I went to the pier with the family a couple of times.

5/19 (11:30pm - 4:00am): I personally only landed one shad on 1/8 oz. spec rig. I missed three huge hits on 1 oz Spro bucktail that was left drifting in the current. I actually had fish on twice, but somehow couldn't get it to set properly. Lost the fish while reeling in... Not sure what was on, but it was definitely much heavier than the fairly large shad that I had caught earlier. As for the other people around me, I saw a lot of shad action and saw two undersized (less than 28") stripers get landed. Considering that I only caught one shad while others were continuing to hook up, I realized again that I'm not a very good lure fisherman.

5/20 (12:00pm - 1:45pm): Went with the family, hoping to get my wife and kids their first fish. There was strong current and kids got bored quickly without any action, so we left for the beach.

Went out to the beach and caught a lot of sand fleas. I wanted to try them out for bait. Played in sand, ate good food, and walked around.

5/20 (6:00pm - 9:00pm): As soon as I got there, someone had caught a 31" bluefish on the pier. The current was slow and I was using one rod with bait (sand fleas & squid) and another rod with spec rig (since I had paid for my wife's fishing entry, I figured why not). Then about an hour and a half later, there was a good bluefish and shad run. I called the wife in - she was taking a nap in the car with one of the kids. She landed her first fish. She hooked two shad, but lost one while landing. I caught a variety of fish: 2 skates, 2 horseshoe crabs, 3 shad, and 1 flounder... But didn't land a bluefish! Everyone around me was catching bluefish though. Actually, one guy who was literally 3' away from me had two double hook-ups. One was two bluefish and another was shad & bluefish. It was pretty crazy. The run lasted about an hour and I had to start packing up to leave for home shortly after. I am pretty sure I had a bluefish on at one point though. Lost hooks (mono line was cut) twice and lost one high-low rig after the reel's drag started screaming... Then snap! I was glad that my wife let me come back to the pier after the beach. :)

On a side note, I thought that the guys who work at the pier were knowledgeable and helpful. As for some of the customers... I had to cover my daughter's ears a couple of times because one of the guys would drop the F-bomb every other sentence loud enough for me to hear clearly. And he was more than 15-20' away... But I guess people like that are everywhere. There were other kids and elderly on the pier and I was hoping that he had common sense to tone down his language.

Wow. What a great write up. Excellent report!!! Thanks for posting.

Yup, you definitely got bitten off by a bluefish. Usually when fishing on a strong current location, it is best to throw lures.

If you want your family to have fun catching fish especially your kids, I highly recommend you take them to Cape Henlopen State Park (CHSP) pier. In the summer when the spots are in, you should see the smiling faces of kids when they're reeling in the fish with their snoopy rods. If they're tired of fishing and want to play in the water, the beach next to the pier is only few feet deep. The entire area is family friendly.

Yep.....ya didn't get skunked on the trip. Can't agree with you about the "not being a good fisherman" thing. Some days we get em...some days we don't.
Too bad about the ear pollution....sometimes there are those that bring the storm to the calm. I carry ear phones and my mp3 player when I go fishing....just in case. Usually just have to plug in only one ear...depending on which ear is upstream and which ear is downstream.

Good report. Have you ever been to Cape Henlopen State Park fishing pier? I agree with TunaFish. A great fishing pier for kids, for everyone. Might be one of the best fishing piers on the East Coast.

Thank you TunaFisha and andypat. I'll check out Cape Henlopen to do my fatherly duty of helping my kids catch fish! Spots seem like the perfect size fish for the kids.

Correction btw - it wasn't the high low rig that got snapped. It was the spec rig. People who were doubling up were also using spec rigs and that was the lure of choice recommended by the guys who work at the pier. They caught shad, blues, stripers, and the flounder (may have been luck).

Ever try a Gotcha Plug?
Yes I did, but I didn't spend enough time with it to hook up to any fish. I'm not very good with lures yet (not comfortable with reeling in at proper speed and jigging to give it variation). The only lures that I have been successful with are the shad darts, including the spec rig. I am planning to keep on trying though... :)

Tunafish: When are you going bridge fishing? I need to use your net. :)
I dread the drive to OC. I'll need to ride shotgun before I go there myself.

It's funny but I can drive on a dime for a trip to DE and it's only 15mins less than going to OC. Maybe I just enjoy the Royal Farms fried chicken at RT 13.

Rambo, I thought my spending on fishing was complete until I read something on fishing with jigs targetting stripers. Then I thought my spending was done until I read something out metals and tins targeting blues. Then I thought my spending was done when I read something about plugs targeting blues and stripers surffishing. Oh lord, I can go on and on!!! LOL!! Now, I'll need to replace my wader, need a SIC guide for my plugging rod, new tackle bag...... WAIT!!! Let me stop...

I told my wife that once I buy the basics, I'm done with the big purchases. I purchased a new 12" rod and reel last week. I also need another plugging reel.

Just when I thought I had the right plugs, I need different ones now. I replaced a few of the same ones when they snapped out to sea. I don't think it will ever end.

I'd rather make the drive to NJ which is 45 minutes longer than OC even. I gotta make a run to OC this week and then up to DE, I got too tanked in Seacrets and left my ID behind.

I stopped fishing the bridge, it's too nasty up there to deal with.

Just out of curiousity, when you say "nasty," what are you exactly referring to? I was planning on fishing on the bridge next month sometime. I've only fished on the bridge one time last year towards the end of the year and the only thing bad that I noticed was the narrow space.

I'm assuming he's referring to the inebriated belligerent aholes there during the summer months when it's crowded. I've never fished the 50 bridge, but I'm assuming it's like most crowded piers during the summer. I don't like fishing crowded piers. I rarely fish on them, but the off season is okay. I've been looking at the 50 bridge from time to time and lately it's been quite empty due to the cold rainy weather. I suppose after Memorial weekend, it's going to be a zoo again. Back in the 80's this week. It's hasn't been this hot since Dec Jan Feb and March. I didn't know April and May was suppose to be colder than last winter.

Ahhh I see. I was hoping that he wasn't referring to the people who fish there. I don't like to fish in crowded areas either and I fished during the off season last year, so I don't know how it gets when the weather is nice... I'll be there to get on a charter boat anyway, so I'll scope out the bridge and fish there if it's not crowded. Thank you for the info.
