I had Friday off, so I got permission from the wife to go on a fishing trip Thurs - Fri evening.

Thursday (5:30pm - 10pm), Oceanic Fishing Pier: I wanted to avoid traffic and got to OC around 5pm. I decided to go to the pier, because there was a lot of boat traffic and bridge doesn't produce as much when that's the case (but there are always exceptions). Anyway, same old story. I went and skunked. Horseshoe crab caught by a couple of people, if that counts as catching.

Thursday (10:30pm - 6:00am), Rt. 50 Bridge: I stuck around about 8 hours to fish both outgoing tide and incoming tide. There were many fish being caught... Just not by me. On the outgoing tide, I saw two keeper stripers being landed and many undersized (but still decent size) stripers being caught and released. I caught an eel and several crabs with my hook. I couldn't position myself closer to the area where the fish were running and I think that was part of my problem. On the incoming tide, there were shad, blues, and stripers. Again, a lot of fish were being caught, just not by me. I had a small 7-8" snapper bluefish and a couple of shad. What impressed me was a high school kid who was using a short & light bass rod with a spec rig on mono line who was catching decent size blues one after another. I kept snagging and losing got-cha plugs (1oz - 3oz). I lost 8 in total, which is probably close to $55-65 in value. On my last trip, I only lost one got-cha plug due to a broken hook on a fish. I didn't have snags like I did on this trip. It wasn't just me - other anglers were getting snagged too. I don't know what happened between my last trip and this trip, but the snagging was unreal. I even snagged and lost a 1/4 oz spec rig while there was fairly strong current. On a side note, it was the beginning of July 4th weekend and there were some ambulance activity. Heckling by drivers was worse this time too. A couple of things were thrown at the fishermen. I got hit with fries and I don't know what was thrown on the other side, but it sounded like metal of some sort. Hopefully after this weekend, things will tone down. I haven't been heckled by anyone walking by, but people in cars think it's somehow funny to heckle since they know we can't catch up to them. But you know that those same people will walk past you quietly on the bridge. Getting something thrown at while I had my back turned ticked me off, but I let it go... I mean what can I do, lol?

Friday, Bay Bee Headboat: I signed up for Bay Bee as insurance in case I didn't catch anything worthwhile on the bridge. After an uneventful night, I really needed to get on this headboat for a chance to redeem myself. But... The boat trip was cancelled for two reasons. 1: They needed 8 people, but only 5 had signed up. 2: T-storms. Even if it weren't for the weather, I think Bay Bee trip would have been cancelled due to not having enough people.

Friday (2pm - 5pm), Bill Burton Fishing Pier: Storm was on the way and wind was brutal. I stopped by to use up the bloodworms that I didn't want to waste. I caught two small white perches and 15 mins before I left, caught a 12" croaker.

Over all, it was a trip that I almost regret going on, but at the same time, I still would go if I had the choice.

Hey you can't catch then if you don't go. We all have those days. I still enjoyed reading your report. Better luck next time. On Positive note the flounder bite in OC isn't very good so the Bay Bee cancellation saved you a few bucks.

Nice report! You might do good fishing the Cape Henlopen State Park fishing pier. You have a chance to catch flounder, rockfish, bluefish, trout, whiting, and spot. You fish at night so you could catch trout under the lights. Did you know the pier is a 1/4 mile long. If you carry a lot of stuff for fishing you might need a cart, or wagon. You will need your landing net. Great place to fish. In my opinion way better then OC fishing.

Thank you for the suggestion! I've gotten this suggestion in the past reports and it's definitely on my list of places to fish. A few weeks ago, a couple of my buddies went out there to fish at night and only caught dogfish and skates and I wanted to wait out a little longer. I will most likely go soon with the family during the day. :)

Thanks for the report.
I work across the highway from the Burton pier, but just never fish it. I have been fishing somewhat nearby on a little rock pile I know and have been wailing on the perch. Most are between 8 & 12" but have pulled them off there up to 14" this year.
Been using soft crab and had a half a 5 gallon bucket full on 2 crabs sunday, having fished from about 2-6pm.

Also, if they need to keep something in the marina ships store across 50 that will help pier fishing at Burton, let me know. I can get it in stock.

Gonna disagree here. In OC you have a much better shot at larger fish than you do CHSP pier this time of year. Right now in Oc off the bridge on a good tide you can have a night of 40+ bass.
CHsP will be 99% dinks.

Some people like to catch flounder. spot, and croaker. A lot of people don't need large fish. That's the people I'm talking to. It is nice we have so many good places to fish in MD. and Delaware. Thanks!

If you don't want tot lose anymore gotchas, buy some 7 strand Malin Wire in 20 lb test. Tie the wire leader with a figure 8 knot to the gotcha and get some SPRO swivels with a 50 lb strength rating. Tie the wire leader to the SPRO swivel with another figure 8 knot.

Get it in Coffee color for the wire

Your welcome Rambo. Looking forward to reading your fishing report from there.
I just joined a private forum and decided to post reports on that website going forward. I am planning to go semi-active on this site due to all the drama (which the private forum doesn't seem to have at all). Just wanted to give you head's up. I still owe you a CHSP report on here though, since I will be going there based on your recommendation.

Hope you find what you're looking for over there. No doubt, you need pretty thick skin to hang with these guys.

Thank you.

Here's what I think is different about the private forum. I am sharing because this forum can take some pointers. I am a failry new member here, so maybe it's not my place to say, but here it is anyway:

1. People participate in the private forum. There are a lot of lurkers on this site and the lurkers just seem to be chasing reports. People on the private forum are genuinely happy to share reports after fishing. It's like keeping a journal/log that you share with other folks who have the same passion.
2. I sense respect between everyone. Jokes are obvious on that forum. On this site, it's obvious that some people know each other and they joke around, but there are many times when words are exchanged between folks and I can't tell the seriousness of the conversation, especially because we're just reading what's written.
3. There are rules and guidelines that seem pretty clear cut and everyone seems to respect them. For example, no poachers on the private forum.

I know that it's hard to change the old ways of many people on P&S. The private forum is smaller and newer, so maybe I am just seeing how P&S used to be when it first started. There are few members here that I certainly respect though... And it's not hard to figure out who they are. Tight lines! :)
