I'm headed to the area Wednesday to visit my little brother in Norfolk. Going to be in the area for a few days and I'll be staying on Virginia Beach the majority of the time. Just trying to get some tips for possible fishing from piers, beach, or the back bays and inlets. Never been to the area, so anything would be appreciated. Not targeting anything specific or looking for monsters, just hoping for some possible action for some C&R fun. As far as rods, I have some medium heavies (freshwater), 7' medium salt combo, and was also thinking of bringing my 8wt fly rod.

Thanks for the help!

Cheers from Wisconsin!

Lynnhaven inlet is a short jaunt from the oceanfront. Fishing at the bridge can be great at times.
You would likely have a good shot at rockfish, speckled trout, or puppy drum there. Jig heads with gulp baits would put you in the game.
There is also quite a bit of shoreline accessible nearby at Pleasure House Point

Fishing 2 days over the past 5 at lesner bridge (lynnhaven) I caught easily over 50 speckled trout and probably as many stripers, also 3 flounder. Saw a couple puppy drum caught. All of my fish came off of a red 3/8 oz jig head and a white 3in bass assassin with a paddle tail. Fished with a sloooow steady retrieve. Most fish are small with an occasional keeper. 7-8ft light action rod with a 2500 or 3000 size spinning reel.

I have had similar luck in my kayak, but I fish more into the marshes- flipped once under the bridge/won't go there again.
My go-to are Mirrolures on the troll and cast to cover water, popping cork with Gulp shrimp when working structure. There are lots of specks- mostly undersize, but fun and easy catching, for the past month.

Rudee inlet can produce specks as well by the bulkhead, but you don't have much access without a boat or kayak. The aquarium boat launch area has limited shoreline access, but I have landed lots of specks easily within casting distance from shore.

Hey everybody,

I don't mean to hyjack this thread but we are going to be visiting or son and daughter in law for Thanksgiving and getting into Hampton on Wednesday night.

I'm a beach guy with all the equipment to hurl all the lead needed.

I have fished Back Bay in the summer and had good luck.

Where can a guy cast some eels off the beach for some stripper action.

Is Chicks beach any good for that?

Virginia beach or up by the light house north of Virginia beach.

I hope to see some of you guys around. I met Islander80 at Back Bay a few years ago.

I second Bass Assassins on a jighead...1/4 oz. if in shallow areas and 3/8 to 1/2 oz in deeper waters depending if the current is ripping. For some reason had better luck with a white jig head. Had good luck with candy corn and pink ghost paddle tails.

Other options include a Sea Striker tandem buck tail rig which will give you good casting distance. Mirrolure 52MR and Rat-L-Trap will produce as well.

Don't forget you need a license if not on Seagull Pier or paid pier.

Thanks for the help folks! Definitely giving me a better idea of what I'm in for. I'll be about a mile walk from Rudee Inlet, so I'll probably give that a go, and Lynnhaven isn't too far for a little cruise over there either.

Would fishing the surf right on Virginia beach be worth the effort without big long chuckers? I can get some pretty good distance with my 8wt, but not sure where the surf breaks and I'm probably not up for wading out too far (guessing it's chilly this time of year).

cschub13,

You don't have to cast far on the beach. Sometime you do and you can't throw long with a short rod.

We all have these big heavers to make us look like we know what we are doing.

My wife says maybe I am just compensating for something.

A couple of years ago between Christmas and New Years we stayed at the Best Western on VB and I fished right behind one night and caught 8 spiny dog fish.

Hey it beats holding a 2ft pole over a hole in the ice on a lake any day.

You see a Honda with a red fish sticker and Air Force sticker on the back, stop and say hi.

We will try to find a beach someplace and throw some lead. I just like chuck'in lead and bow'in up.

Be careful.

No dice. Didn't help that we had very little time and less than ideal conditions.

Fished a tad from the beach in the surf. Also wandered around by the Rudee Inlet for a little with nothing to show.

Appreciate the tips. I'm sure we would have had some luck had we had more time. Only ended up fishing for about 2 hours total. I need a designated fishing trip! :fishing:

Ok went to BBNWLR on black Friday and soaked eels and cut mullet and squid and live mud minnows and caught two skates and a spiny dog fish. Something was biting the head and tails off the mud minnows.

It was one hell of a nice day. Water was pretty sand was nice. A little cloudy but still nice. Lots of bird action and dolphins and even saw a whale spout.
