This is going to be a problem all over, Most of OBX is Federal land,

Alexandria, VA - On the day before President Obama left office, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service issued an edict to phase out the use of traditional fishing tackle on the hundreds of thousands of square miles of public lands under its management.

Director's Order No. 219 will, "require the use of nontoxic ammunition and fishing tackle to the fullest extent practicable for all activities on Service lands, waters and facilities by January 2022, except as needed for law enforcement or health and safety uses, as provided for in policy."

Scott Gudes, vice president of Government Affairs for the American Sportfishing Association (ASA), the trade association that represents the recreational fishing industry, issued a statement of behalf of the industry.

"The sportfishing industry views this unilateral policy to ban lead fishing tackle, which was developed without any input from the industry, other angling organizations and state fish and wildlife agencies, as a complete disregard for the economic and social impact it will have on anglers and the recreational fishing industry," said Gudes.

Gudes further said, "In the limited instances where lead fishing tackle is demonstrated to harm local wildlife populations, the sportfishing industry supports actions to minimize or eliminate these impacts. However, unnecessary and sweeping bans such as this Director's Order will do nothing to benefit wildlife populations and instead will penalize the nation's 46 million anglers and hurt recreational fishing-dependent jobs."

Gudes concluded, "A sound, science-driven and durable policy could've been crafted with input from industry and the broader recreational fishing community. We are hopeful that new leadership at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will repeal this Director's Order and develop public policy in a way that is open, inclusive and based on science."

The American Sportfishing Association (ASA) is the sportfishing industry's trade association committed to representing the interests of the sportfishing and boating industries as well as the entire sportfishing community. We give the industry and anglers a unified voice when emerging laws and policies could significantly affect sportfishing business or sportfishing itself. ASA invests in long-term ventures to ensure the industry will remain strong and prosperous, as well as safeguard and promote the enduring economic, conservation and social values of sportfishing in America. ASA also gives America's 46 million anglers a voice in policy decisions that affect their ability to sustainably fish on our nation's waterways through Keep America Fishing®, our national angler advocacy campaign. America's anglers generate more than $48 billion in retail sales with a $115 billion impact on the nation's economy creating employment for more than 828,000 people.

Regarless of the outcome, One thing we all know about the government is that, despite all logic, they will get their way some day some how. Might not be today or tomorrow, but they will get it through 1000 little cuts no matter how long it takes.

Wonder if they will make an exception for "pre ban" sinkers LOL

Somebody needs to Make Fishing Great Again.
Home Depot in Kitty Hawk has been having highly successful Plover hatchings on top of its roof with has a gravel type overburden perfect for Plover nesting over the rubber ply flat roofing material.

Evidently these Kitty Hawk Plovers who have no beach of their own at the moment due to erosion issues have no problem with roosting over the parking lot which is littered with contractor 4x4 trucks and SUV's loading up on building materials and house plants.

I have not heard of Audubon people seeking to shut down the Home Depot parking lot, just yet, evidently the Plovers are able to do their "Sexy Dance" with all kinds of Human activity nearby.

Fishing has been pretty slow in KDH lately, so I am not the one who is going to make fishing great again, although I have begun practicing a full on Pendulum cast, which will be highly controversial on Avon Pier next Fall. I will give the fellas on the Point a break and move on down the beach a bit to cast, so they will not get too afraid...

We all have beach buggies and carts full of fishing related "stuff" which is made from various materials, including lead. We'll be able to use it until 2022. I'm placing my bet that we'll be able to use most of it, if not all of it, beyond 2022. Hopefully....maybe.
We hunters went thru this crap when lead shot was replaced by steel shot. Sheesh. But we survived.

I can see it now.. Tackle Box Police combing the beach and riverbanks searching tackle boxes and handing out tickets....It Probably won't come to fruition but it has us talking.

By the time Trump cuts all the "fat" out of all these departments I think they will have better things to worry about. Lastly, the New Secretary of The Department of the Interior which controls US Fish and Wildlife will probably nix quite a few of these so called REGULATIONS.

Not a lawyer, but I seem to recollect that the NPS does not have jurisdiction beyond the High Tide line on OBX beaches. The waters from the high tide line to the three mile offshore line are Governed by the State of NC which is all about fishing......No Jurisdiction = No Calling the Shots....Feel free to correct me if I am under the wrong impression.

Since possessing lead is not against the law, it would be hard for Judge Boyle to throw you in the slammer for chucking a Drum bait out with lead.

I have fed a lot of Sharks lead sinkers, especially when they get on the Mike Hayes Rig. Not sure what happens to them after they swallow an 8 ounce pyramid, but they seem to keep coming back for more.

It has till 2022 to get it all , Butt first will be the obvious "Sinkers" I'm sure that they will be gone on day one. That's a biggie for us , how you going to throw 8nbait if you got no 8
How fast do you think the fishing tackle industry is going to tool up to make all the types of sinkers that Saltwater fishermen use, I don't want to think about what they'll cost us.
We hunters get past the ban on lead shot for waterfowl , I was there for that from the beginning , I saw guns ruined by the early steel shot ,Bird fly off after taking a solid hits,
Move forward 40 years now those problems have been over come, with better ammo ,better gun barrels with harder choke tubes. But that took a lot of time and $$$.$$.
This act was done as a "I'm out of here final FU " I'd hate to be a outlaw over a sinker But I will

Actually it is noaa that has jurisdiction up to 3mi out OVER the state.. As well as any other tidal areas in conjunction with the ocean..This means, also in the sounds,as some are tidal.. Btw,noaa is now a big problem.. This was one I forecasted when the previous administration took it upon themselves to appoint noaa with this power.. Also, noaa marches lockstep with doi usfwl nps and as many enviro groups as possible..

If this hasnt been published in the Federal Register, I believe Trumps order to halt new regulations will stop this dead in its tracks or at least give the new administration 60 days to review, edit, or withdraw the order. Hopefully it hasnt been published and will be withdrawn.

Well, lead is toxic. But it's also really tough to get into your system unless you eat it. That's why it's not good to fill up the local farm pond with buckshot and sinkers because the ducks will feed on the underwater grasses, get it in their flesh, and then you eat it and your IQ drops 20 points and you spend your days being proud of the times you remember to put your pants on before going out in public. (I look back on being taught to bite down on lead splitshot to close it around a line and think "that was a bad idea.")

Handling it is safe, while pouring lead molds in a closed garage with the vapors in the air...not so much. Odds are you're looking at a possible ban in closed bodies of freshwater, nothing else in other locations. Nobody's taking your lead weights away.

Nope, Piping Plover. They have infested all of the large flat roof tops with gravel in the Whalebone north area. You hear many locals talk about it and calling BS that the NPS closes anything when there are as many nesting pairs on the top of buildings as on the beaches. (Don't quote me on the numbers but I do remember a lot of birds there)

Have you seen a killdeer as well as a plover?? The plover is EXTREMELY SMALL compared to a killdeer, which is also small.. The features are very similar...
