I have a 12 ft Ex Heavy... I picked it up in August..(thx again jollymon)
For the $$ I consider it Best In Class which is right around 139.00 retail.
Over the Prevail, which I think is the same exact blank. It comes with Fuji reelseat and guides, well worth the extra money. (20.00 or so)
Comfortably can throw 8nBait.... It does have some backbone and is easy to load.
I haven't tried 10nbait but I think it can handle it fine. I'd be gentle with it though.

It is an EXCELLENT Choice for a "starter" Drum Rod...I've seen bunches of them being used and catching fish.
I purchased mine for an anchor rod for pin rigging , and a back up rod in case I have a guest come with me fishing who doesn't have their own rod.

Bass Pro nor Cabela's stocks these..

It is a usual stocked item in Whalebone Tackle and TWs in Nags Head and I've seen them in Red Drum and Frisco rod and gun.

TackleDirect.com has the 12' Battalion for $129.95 with 5 positive reviews. I have used TackleDirect in the past, they have good packaging and prompt shipping. Even though Basspro or Cabelas may not stock this particular rod, their customer reviews are helpful on items that they may stock!

My brother purchased one, didn't like it , so gave it to me.I fish an old 8600 Ambassadeur on it for surf fishing and have been pleasantly surprised by the performance. Being absolutely "old school", I did not expect a two piece commercial rod to stand up to years of 8 & Bait....Use it year around, including big blue catfish up on the James right through the winter. Also have a comparable Tica conventional rod which is good, but the Penn workmanship is far superior. (Of course, if I am fishing the whole arsenal, I bring out the old-style heavers and fish EVERYTHING....)

A friend of mine has a 12' conv with an Avet MCMX on it. I think it is to "whippy" to hit really hard. Not a bad rod but for really trying to throw to Africa it does not have enough backbone for bait'n'8. I am NOT an expert when it comes to rods, this is just how it felt to me

Let's see if I can clear some things up

The model I happen to be talking about is BATSF2550C12 which is the Extra Heavy.. Retail is 139.00

Penn offers two selections in the 12 ft conventional surf rod in the Battalion series.

Witler, I know you spent time doing a internet search I'm sure your new Pal Dave would be Proud! I'm sure if you two continue dating he will teach you how to post needless links and videos. The particular rod BATSF2040C12 is Retail priced at 129.00

Additionally the above mentioned model BATSF2040C12, is probably what Spider-Man finds Whippy and not much backbone for 8nBait. It probably is.

Lastly, if you pair it with a Daiwa "Slosh 20 or 30" SL30SH/SL20SH, Daiwa BG20 or 30, Penn Squall 15 or Penn Fathon 15
You'll have a good combination. All due respect to ABUs as well

The guy is a genius, quoted all these model numbers without searching the internet.
Actually I am

See, before I buy something, I do my HOMEWORK, look at my options then make a decision.
Anyone who persoanally knows me, pretty much knows that I do my homework.
My notes are somewhere on my desk in my office.
If it is not exactly what I want, I know I won't be happy, so I won't buy it.

So Yes Ms. Dave ( witler) , in this case I AM !
