I have a Ford Escape 4X4 this is a full time awd. How do they perform on the beach at Hatteras? I have many years of experience of driving on the beach but always with a regular 4X4 with 4 wheel high and 4wheel low. I know some of these electronic awd' do not do well in the sand. If you use an Escape on the beach I'd like to hear from you. I don't want to buy a permit and find that the Escape does not perform well.

I've seen plenty of awd vehicles on beaches. Mainly Subaru outbacks and foresters. I'd say if you air down your tires and be smart you should be fine.

You will be stuck on ramps 38 & 43 in Hatteras.

I did see some fella from jersey in a yellow mustang make it about 50-60 feet left outta ramp 34 about 7-8 years ago. The look on his wife's face was priceless as he was putting towels under the wheels to get traction. Dunno how relevant that is but it still makes me smile.
