Was down for quick trip with the wife Fri & Sat, fished my favorite stretch of beach on Pea Island south of oregon inlet. No one else around. Lot of grass in the water. Caught 1 slot pup and 1 overslot drum Fri AM then wind shifted to N 20+MPH and bite shut down. Sat AM caught 26" pup but otherwise small mullet and SLOOOOW. Beats working anyways and sat was pretty day. Fleas everywhere. Saw some scattered fingers in the surf but few and far between.

ncdead i have actually caught some decent specks out of the troughs in pea island while bait fishing, have never thrown artificials there for them. i usually go for pups and there is usually plenty of fish and no people, best combination in my mind.
don't see how you could lose access to miles of beach but we'll see how the new bridge shapes up

Yeah...curious how the new bridge situation will change the dynamic at Oregon Inlet and points south. Love fishing artificials in the surf most anywhere but there is something about the solitude of pea island that makes it really put a soul at peace. A beautiful place. When I die I would like some of my ashes scattered there.

From Oregon to Rodanthe man is fighting a fierce battle with mother nature. Much of that section of Pea Island has all but disappeared in recent years from severe storm damage. Most of that section is now completely man made. They finally gave up filling in the area now known as New Inlet. That section has had washouts for more than 10 years and now they have started building a bridge over that section of road. Even though there is no water flowing through New Inlet most of the time, when there is any tide higher than normal, water does flow through the inlet. As time passes it will only get worse. The surf zone in that section is not natural and has some effect on fishing.
